Instructional Routine
Step 1: The Inference Formula (5 mins)
Display the "Equation Slide" and explain that making an inference is like making a trade: you take what's on the page and trade it for a deeper understanding using what's in your brain.
Text Evidence + Schema (My Brain) = Inference
Step 2: Think-Aloud (10 mins)
Read the excerpt where Styx Malone first appears on his yellow moped. Model the inference:
"He looked like he’d just stepped out of a movie. Not a kid movie, either. One of those cool ones where the hero walks away from an explosion without looking back."
Teacher Script:
"The author says he looks like a movie hero who doesn't look back at explosions. (Text Evidence). In my brain, I know that movie heroes who do that are usually very confident, maybe a little dangerous, and they don't care about what others think. (Schema). So, I can infer that Styx wants to project an image of being 'too cool' and untouchable to the younger boys. (Inference)."
Step 3: Partner Trade (15 mins)
Distribute the "Mystery Trader Task Cards." Have students work in pairs to complete Card #1 and Card #2. Circulate and use the following prompts:
- "What specific word or phrase makes you think that?"
- "Why would a person act that way in real life? Does that match the character?"
- "If we didn't have this clue, would your inference still work?"
Step 4: The Great Exit Trade (5 mins)
Have each student complete Task Card #4 independently. Use this as your formative assessment to see who is still struggling to bridge the gap between evidence and conclusion.
Proficient: Inference is logical and directly tied to a specific quote.
Developing: Makes a logical guess but struggles to point to the exact text clue.
Answer Key & Discussion Guide
Card #1: The Extraordinary Wish
Quote: Caleb wants to be "more than ordinary" and is tired of being just a "regular kid in a regular town."
Inference: Caleb feels invisible or bored. He looks up to Styx because Styx represents the "extraordinary" life he craves.
Card #2: The Box of Grass
Quote: Bobby Gene keeps looking back at the house and checking his watch while they are with Styx.
Inference: Bobby Gene is the more cautious/responsible brother. He is worried about getting in trouble or being caught by their parents.
Card #3: Styx's Smile
Quote: Styx smiles, but "his eyes stayed somewhere else, like he was looking at a map only he could see."
Inference: Styx is secretive and always planning. He might not be being fully honest with the brothers about his intentions.
