01. Blueprint Prep: The Straight-Line Warm-up (5 mins)
Have students stand up. Demonstrate a "big straight line down" with your arm (reach up high and pull straight down to the toes). Repeat 3 times. Next, make a "straight roof line" from left to right. Say: "Line builders draw down first, then across! Let's build today's letters!"
02. Constructing Letter L (10 mins) Sound: /l/
Show the Letter L anchor chart. Explain the path of motion: start at the top dot, draw down, and slide right without picking up your marker if using one continuous stroke (or break it into two separate lines).
Teacher Script: "Watch my line go straight down, then slide across the floor. This is uppercase L! Let's practice its sound: /l/, /l/, /l/ like a proud, roaring lion! Can you make lion claws and say /l/?"
03. Constructing Letter I (10 mins) Sound: /ĭ/
Show the Letter I anchor chart. Trace three distinct steps: tall spine down first, a flat hat across the top, and a flat stand across the bottom.
Teacher Script: "We build a tall stick from top to bottom, put a flat hat on top, and a little baseline at the bottom. This is uppercase I! Its sound is /ĭ/, /ĭ/, /ĭ/ like a freezing igloo! Let's shiver and say /ĭ/."
04. Constructing Letter T (10 mins) Sound: /t/
Show the Letter T anchor chart. Build step-by-step: top-down spine first, then cross the roof left-to-right directly on top.
Teacher Script: "Let's drop a tall line straight down from the sky, then give it a wide cross bar right at the top. This is capital T! Let's say its sound: /t/, /t/, /t/ like a ticking clock or a slow turtle!"

Common Misconceptions
Bottom-Up Drawing:
Kindergarteners often draw vertical lines starting from the baseline and moving upward. Force "Top-to-Bottom" with start dots.
Confusing "I" and "L":
Students frequently confuse capital I and lowercase l due to visual similarities. Emphasize that capital I has a distinct top "hat" and bottom "feet".
Vowel Shift (/ĭ/ to /ĕ/):
Short /ĭ/ is often mispronounced or heard as short /ĕ/ (eg, "egloo" instead of "igloo"). Practice exaggerating the shiver gesture.
