Phrases signalling rigor shifts:
"Prompting and support" → "Independently"
"Refer to details" → "Cite specific evidence"
"Summarize" → "Provide objective summary"
"ID argument" → "Evaluate sufficiency"
The Vertical Bridge
When students struggle, look at the standard one grade below . Often, the bridge is found in the specific "annotation" wording. For example, RI.3 focuses on events in 2nd grade, relationships in 3rd, and analysis of interactions in 6th.

Standards Blueprint: RL & RI Vertical Alignment
Duration
90 MIN
Session Goal
To empower K-8 educators with a deep understanding of the Arizona ELA Reading Standards (Literature and Informational Text) through vertical alignment analysis, exploring how complexity and rigor escalate from foundational years to middle school.
Key Objectives
Trace the vertical progression of RL and RI standards from Kindergarten through 8th Grade.
Identify critical "rigor jumps" in the RL/RI strands, particularly at transition years.
Collaborate on instructional strategies that bridge gaps identified in the alignment analysis.

Agenda & Facilitation Notes
10 MIN
Launch: Four Corners
Focus: Vertical Perspective
State: "A 2nd grade teacher's primary focus in RL is identical to an 8th grade teacher's focus in RL—the only thing that changes is the depth." Have participants move based on their level of agreement. Prompt: "What specifically changes in the standard language between those grades?"
20 MIN
The Vocab Vault: Sorting Task
Focus: Standard Terminology
Groups sort technical terms from RL/RI annotations. Facilitator Note: Look for groups debating "Summarize" vs "Objective Summary."

Blueprint Breakdown: Vertical Dive
Focus: Annotation Analysis
Task: Teams trace one strand (e.g., RL.1 or RI.8) across K-8 using Handout Activity 3.
Facilitator Guiding Questions: "Look at the verb: how does it change between 2nd and 3rd grade?" "Find the first mention of 'independence'—what does that imply for earlier grades?" "Where does the terminology shift from 'topics' to 'arguments'?"
25 MIN
Gallery Walk: Spotlights
Focus: Cross-Grade Visualization
Procedure: Tables take their analysis from the Handout Activity 3 and translate it into a large-scale visual "progression map" (poster). One half stays to present.
Rotation Goals: 1. Spot one annotation that provides a "foothold" for later complex skills. 2. Identify a rigor jump that seems too steep.
10 MIN
The Wrap: Reflection
Focus: Instructional Impact
Reflect: "Identify one specific RL or RI standard that requires more intentional vertical collaboration in your building." Participants complete the "Reading Pledge" on their handout.
Facilitation Strategy Playbook
Four Corners
Reveals hidden assumptions about grade-level "ownership."
Sorting Tasks
Requires participants to find nuances in standard language.
Gallery Walk
Builds school-wide shared responsibility for alignment.
Think-Pair-Share
Standardizes reflective practice needed for vertical planning.

Elementary Anchors
Terms like Retell or Main Idea . When do these terms start to phase out in favor of more technical middle-school descriptors? What is the bridge?
Universal K-8
Terms like Analyze or Inference . How does the annotation for "Analyze" change from identifying a character's feeling (K) to analyzing the development of a theme (8)?
Secondary Mastery
Technical terms like Delineate or Objective Summary . What foundational work in grades 3-5 prepares students for the cognitive load of these middle-school requirements?
Facilitator Notes:
Capture notes on specific "rigor jumps" mentioned by teams during the sorting task...

Strand Focus: RI.2 (Central Idea)
K-2 Foundations
Identify the main topic and retell key details of a text.
3-5 Bridge
Determine the main idea; explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text.
6-8 Mastery
Determine central ideas and provide an objective summary distinct from personal opinions.
Strand Focus: RI.8 (Argument/Claims)
K-2 Foundations
Identify the reasons an author gives to support points in a text.
3-5 Bridge
Explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points .
6-8 Mastery
Delineate and evaluate the argument; assess whether reasoning is sound and evidence is sufficient .
Facilitator Look-Fors
Four Corners Rationale
Listen for teachers who argue that the standards are "redundant." Redirect them to the annotations —the fine print where "retell" turns into "analyze the development of."
Gallery Walk Themes
Key rigor jumps often occur in Grade 3 (transition to self-monitoring/determining) and Grade 6 (transition to evaluation/objective analysis).

The Goal
RL Mastery
Trace the Literature journey from storytelling to analysis.
RI Proficiency
Bridge the gap between topic and complex argument.
Articulation
Standardize rigor across grade-level transitions.
"A vertical perspective ensures we aren't just teaching a standard, but building a lifelong reader."

Key Observation:
The shift from "Main Idea" (concrete) to "Central Idea" (abstract) in 6th grade requires synthesis across sections.
Instructional Bridge:
4th/5th grade teachers should model "Objective" language early to prevent "Review-style" summaries in MS.
