What is a Middle Sound?
The middle sound (medial sound) is the phoneme located between the initial (beginning) and final (ending) sounds of a word. In Kindergarten, this most often refers to the vowel sound in CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) words.

The "Detective" Strategies
The Rubber Band Stretch
Have students say the word very slowly. "Sssss-uuuuu-nnnnn." Ask them to "freeze" when their voice is at its loudest or longest point in the middle.
The Rollercoaster Slide
Use your arm as a track. Beginning sound at the hand, middle sound at the top of the shoulder , and final sound at the opposite hand. The "peak" is the middle sound.
The 4-Phoneme Challenge
In words with blends , the "middle" isn't just one box. Students must distinguish between the two internal sounds.
