Sound Detectives Teacher Guide
Intervention Tier 2 / Tier 3 Early Phonics • 25–30 Mins
Sound Detectives Teacher Guide
Explicit, multi-sensory consonant sound mastery targeting: /m/, /s/, /t/, /b/, /f/, /p/
Target Focus M S T B F P
3-Minute Diagnostic Quick-Check (Pre-Instruction)
Show flashcards in random order. Ask: "What sound does this letter make?" Note accuracy and whether the student clips the sound or adds a schwa (e.g., saying /buh/ instead of /b/).
Needs Practice: Hesitation > 3s or incorrect sound substitution.
Schwa Habit: Adds "/uh/" to stop sounds (/p/, /b/, /t/). Model "pure sound".
Mastered: Immediate, crisp pronunciation within 1-2 seconds.
Consonant Articulation & Mouth Cue Matrix
| Letter | Sound Type | Mouth Position & Tactile Cue | Anchor Picture & Prompt |
|---|
| M m | Continuous / Nasal | Lips pressed together; feel nose vibrate. Hum continuously. | 🌙 Moon ("Mmm, yummy!") |
| S s | Continuous / Fricative | Teeth lightly touching; blow steady cool air through center. | ☀️ Sun ("Warm sunny hiss") |
| T t | Stop / Unvoiced | Tongue tip taps roof behind top teeth; sharp burst of quiet air. | 🐯 Tiger ("Tap tongue /t/") |
| B b | Stop / Voiced | Lips pop open; voice box turned ON (feel throat buzz). | ⚽ Ball ("Bouncing ball /b/") |
| F f | Continuous / Fricative | Top teeth gently bite bottom lip; blow warm stream of air. | 🐟 Fish ("Fast swimming /f/") |
| P p | Stop / Unvoiced | Lips pop open with a burst of air; voice box OFF (whisper pop). | 🐷 Pig ("Playful pig puff /p/") |
Stage 1: Direct Instruction & Modeling (I Do) — 8 Mins
Step 1: Sound Discovery & Attention Anchor
Hold up the target card (e.g., M with the Moon 🌙 picture). "Sound detectives, look at my mouth! When I say /m/, my lips close together tightly: /m/. Put your fingers on your throat and nose—feel the vibration? Say it with me: /m/."
Step 2: Connecting Sound to Symbol
Trace the letter on the card with two fingers. "This letter is M. Its sound is /m/. When you see this shape, your brain thinks /m/. Let's trace it in the air while saying: 'Down, slant down, slant up, down: /m/'."
Step 3: Recognizable Anchor Picture Link
Point to the clear picture: "M is for Moon 🌙! /m/ - /m/ - Moon! Does your mouth feel the same when you start the word moon? Yes!"

Interactive Routines
Stage 2: Active Guided Practice (We Do) — 10 Mins
The Mystery Sound Bag
Place items or familiar picture cards in a bag: toy ball ⚽, fish 🐟, tiger 🐯, pig 🐷, sock 🧦, moon 🌙. Pull one out and isolate the initial sound: "Fish! /f/ - /f/ - fish! Which sound card matches?" Students hold up card F.
Pocket Mirror Check
Hand students small handheld mirrors. Prompt: "Look at your lips! Make the /b/ sound (Ball ⚽), then make the /p/ sound (Pig 🐷). Put a hand on your throat. Which one makes your voice box hum?" Contrast /b/ (voiced) and /p/ (unvoiced).
Stage 3: Independent Application & Review (You Do) — 10 Mins
Worksheet Transition: Hand out the Sound Detective Student Worksheet. Guide students through the recognizable picture anchors on Page 1 before allowing independent or partnered work.
- Sound Vocalization: Insist that students softly vocalize each initial phoneme before tracing or matching (e.g., student says "/s/, /s/, sun ☀️" before drawing the line).
- Circulate & Check: Check pencil grip, left-to-right scanning, and articulatory accuracy. Use immediate correction prompts below.
Targeted Error Correction Protocols
Common Phonological Confusions & Scripted Fixes
Issue 1: Adding Schwa (/muh/, /tuh/, /puh/)
Script: "Catch that sound! Don't let the '/uh/' escape! Clip it short: /t/, /t/, /t/. Keep your lips clean: /p/!" Hold your hands in front of your mouth to demonstrate 'catching' the bounce.
Issue 2: B / P Confusion (Voice vs. No-Voice)
Script: Place student's palm on their Adam's apple. "/b/ has a motor inside that buzzes like a ball bouncing! /p/ has no motor, just a puff of cold air like a pig."
Issue 3: Letter Reversal (b vs d, p vs q)
Script: "For letter 'b', the bat comes first, then the ball bounces! (Down line first, then circle forward)."
Tiered Accommodations & Extensions
Struggling / ELL
Pair with tactile sandpaper letters or gel bags. Focus on 2 continuous sounds (/m/, /s/) with pictures before introducing stop sounds.
Fine Motor Needs
Allow stamp markers, bingo dabbers, or magnetic letter placement next to each picture card instead of fine pencil lines.
Rapid Masters
Challenge students to identify ending consonant sounds in the pictures (e.g., "What sound does sun end with? /n/!").

Intervention Decision Rule & Next Steps
8–10 pts: Mastered
Consistent accuracy with pure sounds. Move student to 2-sound blending (e.g., am, at, up) and additional consonants.
5–7 pts: Emerging
Target specific flagged consonants in small-group warmups. Reinforce pure sounds to extinguish schwa vocalization.
0–4 pts: Intensive Focus
Provide daily 5-minute multi-sensory drill focusing on 1 continuous consonant at a time using mirrors and tactile tracing.
