Case File: Beginning & Ending Sounds in CVC Words

Learning Objective
Students will isolate, identify, and write the beginning and ending consonant sounds in CVC words with short vowel sounds.
Key Focus Sounds
Beginning: /c/, /p/, /s/, /b/, /m/, /t/

Materials Needed
Sound Detectives Slides, Anchor Chart, Case Files Worksheet, Evidence Cards, scissors, "magnifying glasses".

Phoneme Isolation Warm-Up (10 Minutes)
Setting the Stage: Tell students that today they are Sound Detectives! A detective's job is to listen closely to find clues hidden at the very beginning and ending of words.
"Good morning, Detectives! Put on your invisible magnifying glasses. Today, words have been broken apart, and we must find the beginning and ending sounds to put them back together!"
Oral Warm-Up Activity (Say-My-Sounds):
- Say the word "cat". Have students repeat it.
- Ask: "Detectives, what is the first sound you hear in cat?" (Choral response: /c/).
- Ask: "What is the final sound you hear? The sound at the very end?" (Choral response: /t/).
- Repeat this oral isolation with "pig" (/p/ - /g/) and "sun" (/s/ - /n/).

Direct Instruction: The Sound Inspector (15 Minutes)
Introduce the Anchor Chart: Gather students around the Anchor Chart. Point to the detective cartoon: words have three parts: the First Sound (Head), the Middle Vowel (Belly), and the Last Sound (Tail).
Modeling Sound Blending (Elkonin Boxes): Draw a 3-box grid on the board or refer to the slide template.
"Look at this word: /p/ - /i/ - /g/. Let's slide our finger under the boxes: /p/ is the first clue. /i/ is middle. /g/ is ending. When we put them together, we solve the case: PIG!"
Teaching "Head, Tummy, Toes" Physical Gesture:
- Beginning Sound: Touch your head and say the first sound (e.g., "/s/").
- Middle Sound: Touch your tummy and say the middle sound (e.g., "/u/").
- Ending Sound: Touch your toes and say the final sound (e.g., "/n/").
- Practice this 3 times as a class using the word "sun".

Guided Practice: Crime Scenes & Slides (10 Minutes)
Interactive Slide Work: Open the Sound Detectives Slides. Work together on the guided mystery challenges.
Example Case: Slide 4 displays a _ a p with a picture of a tap.
"Detectives, look at the slide! The beginning sound is missing! Is it a 'map', a 'cap', or a 'tap'? Let's listen: /t/ - /a/ - /p/. What letter makes /t/? Yes, T! Write 't' on your imaginary boards!"
Partner Sound Check: Have students turn to a partner. Give them the word "bug". Partner A says the beginning sound (/b/). Partner B says the ending sound (/g/). Swap roles with "mop".

Independent & Partner Work (10 Minutes)
Activity 1: "Case Files" Worksheet
Hand out the student-facing Case Files Worksheet. For each CVC image, students must identify the missing beginning or ending letters and write them inside the boxes using neat handwriting.
Activity 2: "Evidence Matching" Card Game
In pairs, students cut out the Evidence Cards. Players take turns matching clue cards (pictures) to beginning or ending letter cards (e.g. matching a picture of "sun" with the letter "S" or "N").
Differentiation Strategies
- Support: Use sound-box cards with tactile materials (e.g., playdough balls for each sound). Press down on each ball while saying the sound.
- EL Support: Highlight mouth shapes for phonemes /p/, /b/, /m/, and /n/. Show visual cards of mouth positions.
- Extension: Challenge students to write the whole CVC word on the back of their worksheet, or swap the first letter to make a new rhyming word.
Assessment & Wrap-Up
- Exit Ticket (5 Min): Say a final word: "map". Ask students to write the ending sound letter on a sticky note and stick it to the door on their way out.
- Key Misconception: Watch for students confusing short vowel sounds (e.g. writing "e" for "i" in pig). Keep emphasizing the "belly" sound. Also monitor letter reversals (b/d/p).

Stretch it like gum: Say the word slowly (s-u-n-n) to hear where sounds live.
Head-Tummy-Toes: Touch your head for beginning, tummy for middle, and toes for ending sound.
Whisper & Shout: Whisper the whole word, then shout only the sound you want to find.
