Deep in the dirt, something shiny caught the bright sunlight. Mateo brushed away the loose soil. He found a small silver whistle tied to a faded blue ribbon. Mateo held it up and turned it slowly in his hand. Neatly carved along the side of the whistle were three tiny stars and the capital letter E.

She turned toward Mateo, holding both hands over her heart in surprise. She had not walked near this quiet part of the yard in many years. Now, she was hurrying toward him with quick, excited steps.
