What is a
Participle Phrase?
It is an action phrase that acts like a giant adjective, modifying (describing) the noun that immediately follows or precedes it.
Micro-Anatomy
Starts with a participle (a verb form ending in -ing or -ed/-en ) + modifiers/complements.

Condition 1
The Dangling Modifier
Occurs when the true subject doing the action is completely missing from the sentence.
Without a proper host, the modifier is left dangling in mid-air, attaching itself to the wrong word and creating nonsense!

[ Walking to school, ] { the morning bell } rang loudly.
The Absurd Diagnosis:
Did the morning bell walk to school? No! The real person walking is completely absent from the sentence.

Condition 2
The Misplaced Modifier
Occurs when the modifier is placed too far away from the word it should describe.
Instead, it sits next to a different, innocent noun, making it look like the action is being performed by the wrong subject!

We saw three active volcanoes [ flying in our helicopter. ]
The Absurd Diagnosis:
Were the volcanoes flying in the helicopter? No! The modifier is misplaced far away from "We" (the real flyers).

The 3-Step Surgical Protocol
Follow these three rigid, repeatable steps to repair any damaged modifier in the lab.

Isolate Modifier
Identify the participle phrase. Ask yourself: What is the action taking place inside this phrase?
"Walking to class..."

Locate the Subject
Ask: Who or what is actually performing that action? (The answer is almost always a person or living subject).
Who walked?
3
Reconstruct & Suture
Rewrite the sentence. Place the true subject immediately adjacent to the participle modifier.
"Walking to class, I heard the morning bell ring."

1. Isolate the Modifier: Look for the action-ing/ed phrase and what it describes.
2. Locate the Actor: Who/what is physically doing that action?
3. Suture & Re-align: If broken, place the actor directly next to the modifier.
