The desert tortoise is built like an armored tank for good reason. Living across the sun-scorched Mojave Desert, it faces blistering ground heat that can exceed 130 degrees Fahrenheit. Because reptiles cannot sweat to cool down, staying above ground during peak summer days would be fatal.

To beat the lethal heat, the tortoise uses strong curved front legs to excavate deep underground burrows. Some burrows plunge ten feet below rocky dirt and extend more than thirty feet in length. Down in these cool chambers, the tortoise sleeps peacefully while the desert above bakes.

Water is another supreme challenge. When rare rainstorms occur, tortoises carve shallow catchment basins in gravel using their claws. They drink deeply from these puddles and store water inside an oversized urinary bladder. Amazingly, an adult tortoise can survive over an entire year on just one generous drink!
