Reading Passage: The Secret Orchard
Read carefully and observe each bold spelling word.
Maya and her brother Leo hurried across the frosty meadow toward the old apple orchard. A sharp dusk wind began to whip through the bare branches, causing dry autumn leaves to twirl into the darkening sky. A severe storm was forecast before midnight, turning their twilight chore into an urgent mission.
Their father had asked them to inspect the wooden perimeter fence along the eastern farm border to keep the animals safe. Leo lifted his tin lantern high to illuminate the damp path. High above them in a weathered pine tree, an alert barn owl shifted on its solitary perch, watching the children work.
Near the creek, Maya spotted three broken cedar rails. Hauling the heavy timber posts back into place was a difficult burden, yet the siblings leveraged their strength together. As Leo tightened the wire latch against a jagged stone, friction produced a bright orange spark that briefly lit the twilight.
With the fence properly repaired, the pair inspected the wooden crates filled to the brim with their family’s crisp autumn harvest. Hard physical labor under chilly gusts had given both children a deep thirst, and they sprinted toward the glowing windows of their warm farmhouse just as the first raindrops fell.
