Facilitator's Mission Guide
15 Minutes
Learning Objective
Students will identify and accurately decode multisyllabic words containing the schwa sound /ə/. They will practice reading these words fluently in a competitive, game-based context.
Preparation
- Print 1 **Game Board** per student.
- Print 1 **Word Scout List** per student (or pair).
- Provide pencils and privacy screens (folders).
The Mission Sequence
01
Briefing (3 Mins)
Review the Schwa sound. Remind students it's the "lazy" vowel that often sounds like a soft "uh" or "ih". Use the word Balloon (balloon) and Pencil (pencil) as examples.
02
Setup (2 Mins)
Students secretly mark their fleet on the "My Ocean Grid". They should draw ships for a total of 8 words (squares).
03
Battle (8 Mins)
Pairs take turns "attacking." To attack, a student must read the word in the square clearly. If it's a HIT, the attacker records the word in their Sunk Ship Log.
04
Debrief (2 Mins)
Students use the Word Scout List to check their accuracy and complete the Captain's Log reflection.
Scouting Tips
If students struggle to hear the schwa, have them clap the syllables. The schwa is never in the stressed (loudest) syllable. In sev-en, SEV is loud, so 'en' is the lazy schwa.

*Note: The schwa sound can be spelled with any vowel letter. It occurs in the unstressed syllable of a word.
Common Misconception
Students often try to spell schwa words exactly how they sound (e.g., "pencul" or "seven"). Emphasize that we must "think to spell" by saying the word in its stressed form sometimes, or simply memorizing the "lazy" vowel.
Victory!
The player who sinks a total of 8 opponent's words first wins, but only if they correctly read every word!
