Championship Lap (Sample Response)
In the fable, the Tortoise wins the race because his steady persistence is more effective than the Hare's overconfidence. The author states, "the Tortoise kept plodding on, and at last arrived at the goal." This proves that continuous effort will succeed, even if others are faster at first. In conclusion, slow and steady truly wins.

Swaying Iron
San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge was built to withstand savage ocean winds. To prevent the massive structure from snapping, engineers designed the bridge deck to sway sideways up to 27 feet, and move up and down up to 15 feet. This flexibility lets the suspension bridge absorb fierce currents without collapsing.
PROMPT:
Based on the passage, why did engineers design the Golden Gate Bridge with so much flexibility?

Guardians of the Peak

The Snap Trap
The Venus flytrap grows in acidic, nutrient-poor bogs where soil lacks essential nitrogen. To feed itself, the plant lures insects into its clam-like leaves with sweet-smelling nectar. If an insect touches two trigger hairs within twenty seconds, the leaves snap shut in a fraction of a second, trapping and digesting the prey.

Sickness of the Sea
When ocean temperatures rise even slightly, corals become deeply stressed. In response, they expel the colorful, microscopic algae living in their tissues, which provide most of their food. Without this algae, the coral turns completely bone-white and begins to starve, a tragic event called coral bleaching.

Ten Thousand Retries
Thomas Edison's laboratory tested over six thousand different fibrous plants—including bamboo and thread—to find a filament that would burn for a long time inside a lightbulb. Instead of giving up after thousands of unsuccessful runs, Edison famously stated, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."

RACES Strategy Small-Group Intervention Framework
Pit Stop Pacing
- 00-05m: Warm-Up / Anchor
- 05-15m: Mini-Lesson / Build
- 15-25m: Practice Laps (Cards)
- 25-28m: Driver Check-Out
Instructional Focus: Constructing Valid Arguments
This intervention is designed to transition students from fragmented, single-sentence answers to fully supported, analytical, five-part paragraphs. Emphasize that writing is a linear track: you cannot skip a step (R-A-C-E-S) without spinning out.
SESSION 1
Introducing the Strategy Engine
Goal: Master R & A (Restate & Answer)
Direct Instruction (10 min):
Introduce the RACES strategy using the Anchor Chart. Focus on how the "R" and "A" fit together to form the first sentence. Run a mock sentence together on the board using a familiar topic (e.g., "What is your favorite food?"). Show how to delete question words.
Guided Practice (12 min):
Hand out Task Cards (Laps 1 & 2). Read the passages together. Model how to locate details in the text. Have students write out only the combined R and A sentences on dry-erase sleeves. Score their lines live.
SESSION 2
Fueling Up with Evidence
Goal: Master C (Cite Evidence)
Direct Instruction (10 min):
Gather at the Anchor Chart and zoom in on "C" (Cite). Teach the importance of quotation marks as the "tires" that grip the pavement. Introduce sentence starters: "According to the text..." and "The author writes...".
Guided Practice (12 min):
Revisit Task Cards (Laps 3 & 4). Instruct students to highlight the exact quote in the text first, then copy it onto their writing sheets using correct citation mechanics. Check for quotation marks.
Pro-Driver Scaffolding Strategies
Struggling Writers Use color-coded highlighting on cards (e.g., green for text evidence) before copying. Provide sentence stems on strips.
Fast Finishers Challenge them to provide an alternative second piece of evidence (Double-Citing) for maximum analytical power.
Mechanics Check Ensure kids always separate their own words from the quote with a comma (e.g., The author states, "...").
