Warm-up: The Mystery Mark
Display the phrases "His" vs. "John's" on the board. Ask students: "Both words show that someone owns something. Why does one have a mark (apostrophe) and the other doesn't?" Collect initial ideas without confirming the rule yet.

Watch the Khan Academy video Introduction to the Possessive . Use these key moments for engagement:
Pause at 0:50: Ask students to predict the shorter way to say "the carrot that belonged to that rabbit."Pause at 2:00: Before the exception is revealed, ask if they can think of ownership words that don't use apostrophes.Summary (3:15): After viewing, reveal the Pronoun Exception Anchor Chart and have students echo the main rule: "Nouns use 's, but possessive pronouns NEVER take apostrophes."

Activity: Rewrite the Room
Place the 12 Station Cards around the classroom. Students will travel with their Recording Sheet to each card.
Student Task:
"Read the phrase on the card (e.g., 'The bag belonging to Mary'). Rewrite it two ways: first as a possessive noun ('Mary's bag') and then as a possessive pronoun ('Her bag')."

Rapid-fire check. Say a word/phrase. Students give Thumbs Up if it needs an apostrophe (Noun) and Thumbs Down if it doesn't (Pronoun).
