Lesson Flow
5 MIN
Warm-up: The Prank Discussion
Distribute the POV Reflection Journal . Have students respond to the prompt: "Have you ever played a trick on someone? Did you know it was a trick? Did they know?"
Teaching Tip: This builds the concept of "hidden information" which is central to understanding 1st Person POV.
5 MIN
Video Viewing: POV Breakdown
Watch the Khan Academy video on POV. Focus specifically on the segment starting at 2:11 (Benny and the Monster).
Guided Question:
"In the video, how did the narrator know how BOTH Benny and Rita were feeling? What pronouns let us know it was 3rd Person POV?"
20 MIN
Main Activity: The Switch
Distribute Benny's Fright Writing Sheet . Students must rewrite the 3rd person scene from Benny's 1st person perspective.
Change pronouns to "I", "me", "my".
Crucial: Remove all mention of Rita and the costume. Benny doesn't know it's her yet!
Focus on describing the "monster" and Benny's fear.
10 MIN
Sharing: Scary Benny Stories
Have 3-4 volunteers read their rewritten scenes. Discuss the change in tone.
Discussion Prompt: "How did the story become scarier when we didn't know it was just Rita in a costume? How did the First Person POV change our experience as readers?"
5 MIN
Closure: Final Reflection
Students complete the final prompt in their POV Reflection Journal : "Why does an author choose First Person for scary stories?"

Second Person
"YOU"
The Narrator is...
Speaking directly to YOU, the reader.

YOU • YOUR • YOURS
Examples:
• "Choose Your Own Adventure" books
• Directions or Recipes

An outsider watching the story.
