The Hook: The Secret Message
Show a slide with a mysterious note: "I saw the thief run toward the park. I am sure it was a squirrel!" vs. "Leo saw the thief run toward the park. He was sure it was a squirrel."
Ask: Who is telling the story in each note? How do we know?

Direct Instruction: Detective Clues
Use the Detective Training Slides and Anchor Chart to define First-Person (Inside the story) vs. Third-Person (Outside looking in).
First Person
Narrator is a character. Use pronouns: I, me, my, we .
Third Person
Narrator is an observer. Use pronouns: He, she, they, [Names] .

Guided Practice: Witness Statements
Hand out the Witness Statements Activity . Read the two perspectives of "The Missing Cookie" aloud as a class.
Statement A: The Baker (1st Person)
Statement B: The Dog (3rd Person POV observing the Baker)
Guide students to use highlighters to find pronouns that give away the POV.

Independent Practice: Case Files
Students complete the Case File Worksheet . They must identify the POV of four short snippets and rewrite one snippet from the opposite perspective.

Debrief: The Case Closed
Review answers. Ask: "Which POV tells us more about how a character feels inside?" (1st Person). "Which POV gives us a bigger view of everything happening?" (3rd Person).
