"Good morning, everyone! Today, we're going to become detectives, unlocking hidden stories and meanings. Our lesson is called Picture This! Inferring Meaning , and it's all about a super important skill: inferring!"

"Before we dive in, let's get our detective brains warmed up. I'm handing out a quick Warm-Up . Take a look at the image and description, and answer the questions based on what you observe and what you think might be happening."
Give students 1-2 minutes. Then facilitate a brief share-out of observations (facts) vs. guesses (inferences).
02 What is Inference?

"An observation is simply what you directly see . It's a fact. If I say, 'The sky is blue,' that's an observation. Can someone give me another example?"

"Next: prior knowledge . This is what you already know from life. If you see someone shivering, your prior knowledge says they might be cold. What's something you know from experience?"
(Display Slide 5)
"Finally: Inference ! This is the formula: Observation + Prior Knowledge = Inference . It's 'reading between the lines.' Why is this important?"

"Let's do Scenario 1 together. Look at the child with the muddy clothes. What's a cold fact? (mud, deflated ball). What do we know about mud and deflated balls? (usually means a game went wrong). So what can we infer? (The game ended because the ball popped, or they had an accident)."
"Now, work in pairs for Scenario 2 on Slide 8. You have 3 minutes!"
