Instructional Voyage Pacing
WARM-UP 05 min
Anchors Aweigh: Long Vowel Review
Begin by chanting long vowel sounds: /ā/, /ē/, /ō/. Explain that vowels are clever pirates who love to team up! Introduce the pirate rule: "When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking and says its name!" Write rain, feet, and boat on the board. Model decoding.
I DO 10 min
The Captain's Code: Explicit Instruction
Introduce the 3 long-vowel islands and their spellings: Long A (ai/ay), Long E (ea/ee), and Long O (oa/oe). Write one pair on the board (e.g., sail vs. bay). Point out spelling positions: ai likes the middle of words; ay loves the very end. Teach students that these positions are their "treasure maps" to reading.
WE DO 15 min
Crew Sorting: Guided Practice
Gather students. Pull cards from the Vowel Voyage Sorting Cards. Read a card aloud (e.g., "goat"). Have the crew repeat the word, segmenting the sounds (/g/ - /ō/ - /t/). Have a student helper run up and tape the card under the correct sail on your anchor chart. Ask: "Why does goat go under OA and not OE?" (Because OA is in the middle, OE is usually at the end). Repeat with spelling tricksters.
YOU DO 15 min
Plundering the Loot: Cut-and-Paste
Distribute the Loot Locker Cut-and-Paste Worksheet. Students cut out word chests, sort them into spelling columns, and paste them down. Encourage quiet reading or spelling partner checks. Conclude with the Pirate Plunder Exit Ticket to gauge baseline mastery.

🧭 Navigation Tools & Word Banks
Reference lists, differentiation tips, and master answer keys
The Master Treasure Word Banks
Long A (/ā/) ai / ay
ai (middle): rain, tail, sail, paint, train, nail, mail
ay (end): day, play, clay, tray, bay, spray, stay
Long E (/ē/) ea / ee
ea (mid/end): leaf, team, beach, clean, meat, sea
ee (mid/end): tree, seed, feet, green, queen, sleep
Long O (/ō/) oa / oe
oa (middle): boat, soap, road, goat, coat, toad
oe (end): toe, hoe, doe, foe, joe, aloe
Pirate Pitfalls: Common Misconceptions
- The Position Trap: Students may spell "day" as "dai". Reinforce that ai and oa do not like to sit at the end of a word (they get scared without a tail consonant protector!). ay and oe are tough and live right at the end!
- Homophones Hook: meat and meet sound identical but are spelled differently. Teach students context clues (e.g., "The pirate wants to meet the queen" vs. "The pirate eats meat on the ship").
Supporting Struggling Sailors
Focus strictly on one vowel team set at a time (e.g., only ai/ay) before combining them. Use color-coded vowel letter blocks to physically segment word positions.
Challenging Advanced Officers
Encourage students to discover multi-syllable vowel team words (e.g., rainbow, sailboat, oatmeal, seafoam) and write short story adventures using at least 5 words from the deck.
