Phase 04 // Dialogue & Check
Drafting Step 4: Dialogue Mechanics & Self-Monitoring
Dialogue adds realism to characters. Use the Dialogue Blueprint to trace quotation rules, complete a short practice exchange, and check off editing items as you finish your masterpiece.
Dialogue Blueprint Rules
1 The Quotes Rule
Enclose all spoken words within quotation marks. Capitalize the first word of the spoken dialogue.
"We need to escape!" she yelled.
2 The Punctuation Corner
Periods, commas, question marks, and exclamation points almost always stay inside the closing quote.
"It's too late," whispered John.
Interactive Dialogue Sandbox
Write one correct sentence containing dialogue between two characters:
Structure & Mechanics
Structure Checklist
Dynamic Hook: My lead starts immediately inside the action/setting.
Sensory Details: I utilized at least 4 vivid sensory descriptions.
