UNIT 1: STRAIGHT LINES
Duration: 45 Mins
PHONICS OBJECTIVE
Identify H/h name and /h/ sound. Review sounds of l (/l/) and t (/t/).
FINE MOTOR GOAL
Construct straight-line letters using vertical and horizontal strokes.
CIRCLE MAP WORDS
Associate hat , house with /h/ and lamp with review sound /l/.
Required Preparation & Materials
Slide Deck (Line Masters Slides)
Fine Motor Center Worksheets
Chart paper (for Circle Map poster)
Playdough or Popsicle sticks
Cut & Paste student maps
Scissors, glue sticks, crayons
Lesson Pacing & Steps
10 Min
Warm-Up: Letters in the Air
Review review letters l (long down line) and t (down line, cross the top). Introduce H: "Two tall lines standing up, one flat line holding their hands." Teach students to draw letters in the air while repeating: "Line down, line down, cross!" Introduce lowercase h : "Tall line down, bounce back up and over a hill!"
15 Min
Direct Instruction: Capital vs. Lowercase & Circle Map
Show students capital H and lowercase h. Emphasize that they have different shapes but make the exact same sound (/h/ - like breathing out warm air).
Script: "Put your hand in front of your mouth. Say /h/, /h/ hat. Do you feel the warm air? That is the 'H' sound!" Assemble the Anchor Chart (Circle Map) on the rug. Place picture card hat and house inside, and contrast with review sound card lamp (/l/ sound).
15 Min
Small Group rotations & Fine Motor Centers
Students rotate to student-led and teacher-led centers:
Center A (Teacher-led): Guided drawing & writing of 'hat', 'house', 'lamp'.
Center B (Fine Motor Lab): Playdough or stick building mats for H, h, l, t.
Center C (Cut & Paste Sorting): Glue correct 'h' and 'l' words into maps.

TEACHING MANUAL
Anchor Chart Setup: The Circle Map
Create an interactive large-format poster on your chart paper before class. During carpet time, keep picture cards with hook-and-loop tape ready.

hat 👒
house 🏠
hop 🐸
1. Outer Boundary: Draw a large outer circle. In the center, draw a small circle with Hh.
2. Target Words: Place cards for hat (👒) and house (🏠) inside the big circle.
3. Contrast Sound: Place lamp (💡) outside the circle. Have kids identify why it goes outside! ("It starts with /l/, not /h/!" )
Kids Center Rotations Setup
Center 1: Fine Motor Tactile Lab
Provide popsicle sticks or playdough. Have students roll logs or place sticks on top of the physical letter mats for H, h, l, and t.
Success check: Students must run their finger along the built line to review physical letter stroke directions.
Center 2: Cut-and-Paste Map
Provide the Cut-and-Paste student page. Kids first color the pictures, use safety scissors to cut out the squares along dashed lines, and glue pictures starting with /h/ inside their Circle Map.
Review elements: Pictures will contain distracting review sound letters (lamp, tent).
Instructional Supports
For Struggling Learners
Have students practice making lines in visual sand trays or textured salt boxes before writing.
Highlight the horizontal bar of the H with a bright yellow marker so they spot the connection.
For Advanced Learners
Have advanced students identify words inside the room starting with /h/ and write them down.
Challenge them to write short label words (e.g., "hat") independently on blank margins.
Formative Assessment Checklist
Correct stroke sequence for H and h.
Correct initial sound sorting (/h/ vs /l/, /t/).
Distinguishes big H from little h shapes.

Slide 4 of 6
How do we say the /h/ sound?
It sounds like breathing warm air on your hands on a cold day! Or when you are tired after running fast: /h/, /h/, /h/ .
🖐️ Try This Together:
Put your hand flat right in front of your mouth.
Open your mouth and breathe out: "/h/! /h/!"
Can you feel the warm breath on your skin? That is the sound of H!
👒 hat /h/ - /h/ - hat
🏠 house /h/ - /h/ - house
🐸 hop /h/ - /h/ - hop
💡 lamp Starts with /l/!
👂 Listen carefully! Does lamp make the /h/ sound? No! It belongs to letter L.
