Midnight Modifiers: 25-Minute Express Plan
25-Minute Sprint
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.8.1
High-Priority Target
Differentiate adjectives from adverbs by identifying what word is modified and answering which one/what kind vs. how/when/where .
The Critical Trap
Untangle deceptive "-ly" adjectives (ghastly, deadly, ghostly ) from true action-modifying adverbs.
Success Metric
80%+ mastery on the 3-question Cryptic Clues Exit Ticket administered during the final 5 minutes.
Fast-Paced Instructional Timeline (25 Minutes Total)
Every minute counts
0:00-0:05 (5m)
Hook & Rapid Direct Teach (Slides 1-4): Display Slide 1. Compare "The ghost walked" vs. "The ghastly ghost floated silently" . Flash Slide 2 (Adjectives = Nouns) and Slide 3 (Adverbs = Verbs/Modifiers). Warn students about the -ly Trap on Slide 4.
0:05-0:11 (6m)
Ballroom Dissection "We Do" (Slide 5): Guide the whole class through dissecting the ballroom challenge sentence. Cold-call two students: one to identify the noun receiver and one to test if ghastly is an adjective or adverb.
0:11-0:20 (9m)
Manor Investigation Sprint (Worksheet): Students work in detective pairs on the streamlined 1-page worksheet. Circulate actively. Coach students to write the modified word first before assigning the part of speech.
0:20-0:25 (5m)
Cryptic Clues Exit Ticket & Collection: Students complete the half-page exit ticket individually in silence. Collect at the door as the formative assessment checkpoint.
The Golden Question Modifier Anchor
Never look at suffix endings first! Always ask: "What word is receiving this description?"
• Noun / Pronoun → Adjective (Which? What kind? )
• Verb / Adj / Adverb → Adverb (How? When? Where? )
The -ly False Friend List Watch Out
These words end in -ly but are strictly Adjectives because they describe nouns:
• ghastly (face)
• ghostly (voice)
• deadly (potion)
• friendly (spirit)
Rapid Differentiation Tactics (25-Min Setup)
Struggling Learners
Have them circle the modified noun in orange and verbs in green before labeling modifiers.
On-Grade Level
Require students to state which question the modifier answers (how vs. what kind ).
Advanced / Early Finishers
Challenge them to write a sentence where an adverb modifies an adjective (e.g., "unusually creepy" ).

How many? (twelve ravens, several shadows)

How? (drifted silently , screamed wildly )
When? (arrived tonight , suddenly vanished )
Where? (lurked inside , hovered upstairs )
To what extent? (extremely cold, too quiet)
