The Anger Shield
Decoding ZJ's Masked Emotions in "Before the Ever After"
NOVEL STUDY REFERENCE
What is Masking?
Sometimes, direct emotions like fear and sadness feel too heavy or vulnerable to show. To protect themselves, people cover them up with a secondary emotion: anger.
ZJ's Anger Shield
As ZJ watches his father's brain change from concussions, his world feels scary and unstable. He acts angry, but beneath that shield, he is grieving, confused, and deeply afraid of losing his hero.
Visible Surface (What We See)
ANGER
Screaming, clenching fists, wanting to yell
Hidden Core (What We Infer)
FEAR Scared of his dad's illness & memory loss
SADNESS Grieving the loss of who his father used to be
