Setting: The school playground on a sunny March morning. Sam, Patty, and Finn are wearing green. A tiny hat is sitting on a bench.
Sam:
Happy St. Patrick’s Day, everyone! Look at all the green we are wearing.
Patty:
I even have green socks with tiny shamrocks on them. Did you know shamrocks are a symbol of Ireland?
Finn:
I just hope there is a parade later. Parades mean music, dancing, and maybe some gold chocolate coins!
Sam:
(Pointing at the bench) Hey, wait a second. Look at that tiny green hat! Who would leave that there?
Lucky:
(Voice from behind the bench) I didn't leave it! I'm just taking a nap. It’s hard work being this lucky!
Finn:
(Jumping back) Whoa! Did that bench just talk to us? Is it a magic bench?
Patty:
Benches don't talk, Finn. But leprechauns do! (She peers behind the bench) Hello there!
Lucky:
(Popping up) Top of the morning to ya! My name is Lucky. And I’m looking for something very important.
Sam:
Is it a pot of gold? I’ve heard leprechauns keep their gold at the end of rainbows.
Lucky:
Gold? Everyone always asks about the gold. No, I'm looking for the "Heart of the Clover." It's a special four-leaf clover that only grows when people are kind.

Patty:
A kindness clover? That sounds much more interesting than a heavy pot of gold coins.
Finn:
Wait, if we find it, do we get three wishes? That’s what happens in my storybooks.
Lucky:
Wishes come from hard work and good hearts, little friend. But I’ll tell you what... if you help me find it, I’ll share the real secret of St. Patrick’s Day with you.
Sam:
We’re in! Where do we start looking? Should we check near the garden?
Lucky:
To find the Heart of the Clover, we must follow the three clues. Clue number one: Find a place where someone shared a smile today.
Patty:
Oh! I saw Sam help a younger student find their classroom this morning. They both had huge smiles!
Finn:
That was over by the big oak tree. Let's go!
(They all pretend to walk in a circle to the next location)
Lucky:
Good! You found the spot. Now for clue number two: Find a place where someone learned something new.
Sam:
That’s easy! Patty was telling us about Ireland while we waited for the bell. She told us about the green hills and the Giant’s Causeway.
Patty:
I read it in a book! St. Patrick’s Day is a celebration of Irish culture. People wear green to remember the beautiful "Emerald Isle."

Lucky:
Wonderful! Knowledge is a treasure that never runs out. Now for the final clue: Find a place where friends are simply having fun.
Finn:
That’s right here! We are having fun together right now. We’re exploring, talking, and laughing!
Lucky:
(Taps his nose and winks) Exactly! Look down at your feet.
Sam:
(Gasps) There it is! A four-leaf clover! It’s glowing just a little bit.
Patty:
It’s the Heart of the Clover. Because we were kind, we learned things, and we stayed together as friends.
Finn:
So, Lucky... what’s the real secret of St. Patrick’s Day? Is it a magic spell?
Lucky:
The secret is this: You don’t need a leprechaun to find luck. Luck is what you make when you are kind to others. That is the real pot of gold.
Sam:
I think I understand. Being a good friend makes everyone feel lucky.
Patty:
And celebrating together makes the world a little brighter.
Finn:
I still want to find some chocolate coins, though!
Lucky:
(Laughing) Check your pockets, Finn! A little bird told me you might find a treat there.
Finn:
(Pulls out a chocolate coin) NO WAY! Happy St. Patrick’s Day, everyone!

The Story of a Shepherd
Did you know that St. Patrick was not actually born in Ireland? He was born a long time ago in Britain. When he was just 16 years old, he was captured by pirates and taken across the sea to Ireland.
In Ireland, Patrick had a very lonely job. He worked as a shepherd , taking care of sheep on the green hills. He spent many years alone in the rain and sun. During this time, he learned to love the Irish people and their culture.
After six years, Patrick escaped and went back home to his family. But he never forgot Ireland. He had a dream that the people of Ireland were calling him back. He decided to study hard and return to the "Emerald Isle" to help others.
One famous legend says that St. Patrick used a shamrock to teach a lesson. He showed people that the three leaves were part of one single plant. Today, people all over the world wear green shamrocks on March 17th to celebrate him!
There is also a funny story that Patrick chased all the snakes out of Ireland. Scientists say there were never really snakes in Ireland, but it is a fun story to tell during the parade!
