Materials: Mnemonic Cards S, A, T; Tactile Mats S, A, T; Sand trays.
Instructional Script & Procedure:
- Phonics Launch (3m): Hold card S. "Look, this is S. Sound is /s/ like snake! Hold arm out and slither!" Repeat for A (/a/ - tickly ant) and T (/t/ - clock).
- Sound Search (5m): Lay S, A, T cards face-up. "Touch the letter that makes the /t/ sound." "Touch the letter that says /s/."
- Muscle Mapping (10m): Put Tracing Mat S on desk. "Trace with two fingers from star. Chant: 'Slither like a snake... /s/!' Now write in sand." Repeat for A & T.
- Dictation (7m): "On your board, write the spelling for /a/." "A says /a/." Provide direct finger path help.
- Word Play (5m): Slide letters together: s-a-t. "Blend: ssssa-t... SAT!"
CFU Check: If student adds a schwa ("suh" instead of pure /s/), redirect instantly by placing a finger over your lips and making a clean, quiet /s/ sound.

- Sound Safari Gameplay (17m):
- Lay out tiles on carpet. Place blue "Phonics River" across center.
- Students roll die to move. Land on letter? Sound it and chant mnemonic.
- Reach the river? Draw a "Jungle Bridge" card. Correctly blend the CVC word (e.g. S-I-T) to cross the river.
- Wrap-up (5m): Congratulate safari explorers. Assess performance on the Progress Sheet.
Teacher Tip: Physical movement combined with decoding (multisensory motor integration) has a 40% higher retention rate for children with attention-deficit traits.
Session 10 Objective: Word Chaining & Sound Substitution
Materials: Letter Card tiles; Dry-erase whiteboards.
Instructional Script & Procedure:
- Phonics Launch (3m): 3-minute visual warm-up. Prompt sound recall and rapid capitalization matchup.
- Sound Search (5m): Lay S, A, T cards. "Assemble the word SAT." Children arrange cards.
- Chaining Procedure (17m):
- "Now change the /s/ in SAT to /p/." "What's the word?" PAT!
- "Change /a/ in PAT to /i/." "Word?" PIT!
- "Change /t/ in PIT to /n/." "Word?" PIN!
- Have students write each word chain vertically on their boards to create a "chain ladder".
- Procedure Check (5m): Review the final word. Erase whiteboards in long swipes while sounding out.
CFU Check: If student struggles with substitution, place colored letter tiles down and physically pull S away and push P in to show the visual replacement.
Early Phonics Foundations Sequence Page 6 of 8
Milestone 3: Advanced Decoding & Fluency (Sessions 11-14)
SESSIONS 11 & 12 LESSON PLANS
Session 11 Objective: Nonsense Word Decoding
Materials: Nonsense Word Cards (pib, tas, nit, san, nas); Whiteboards.
Instructional Script & Procedure:
- Phonics Launch (3m): Shuffle flashcards. Drill all 6 sounds at lightning speed. No actions, pure recall.
- Sound Search (5m): Lay down cards p-i-b. "Who can make the sounds /p/ /i/ /b/? Is this a real word? No, it's an alien word!"
- Alien Decoding (10m): Lay nonsense word cards face-down. Student draws one (e.g. "tas"). "Touch each letter and say sound: /t/ /a/ /s/. Now slide and blend: TAS!"
- Dictation (7m): Dictate alien words: "san", "pib", "nit". Force students to spell by sound alone.
- Word Play (5m): Students create their own nonsense alien words on whiteboards and challenge the teacher to decode them!
Why this works: Nonsense word decoding prevents children from relying on visual memory (sight word memory) and proves that they have truly mapped the phonetic letters.
Session 12 Objective: Sentence Reading Fluency
Materials: Chart paper with sentences: "Sat sits. Sat has a pin. A pin is in a tin."
Instructional Script & Procedure:
- Phonics Launch (3m): Rapid fire sound recall. Highlight vowel cards A and I specifically.
- Sound Search (5m): point to sentence chart. "Touch the letter that says /s/ in the first sentence."
- Procedure (10m): Touch under "Sat". "Let's sound out this word: s-a-t... Sat!" Repeat for "sits". "Now let's read the whole sentence together: 'Sat sits.' Awesome!"
- Dictation (7m): Dictate: "a pin sits". Emphasize spaces and ending periods.
- Word Play (5m): Act out the story! Pretend to find a pin in a metal tin box while pointing to the text sentences.
CFU Check: If the student guesses high-frequency words, point under the letters. "Look at the sounds. Do not look away. Tell me what letters you see."
