HOT HAND DECODERS
Novel Study & Phonics Integration • Chapters 1–5
BOOK LEVEL
RL 4.2
Instructional Framework
Students reading Hot Hand by Mike Lupica are often highly engaged by the sports narrative but may struggle with multisyllabic decoding. This companion bridges the gap by mapping high-frequency, sports-themed words directly to phonetic spelling patterns and syllable-division rules (VC/CV, V/CV, VC/V). Use these strategies before reading to build fluency and eliminate frustration.
Key Syllable Patterns in Chapters 1–5
Closed Syllable (VC/CV)
Vowel is short, followed by at least one consonant.
up-set shat-ter ten-sion
Silent E (V-C-e)
Vowel is long, silent e at the end makes it say its name.
ath-lete de-fense game-time
Vowel Teams
Two vowels work together to make one long sound.
coach (oa) court (ou) sea-son (ea)
Consonant + Le (-le)
An unaccented final syllable containing consonant + l + e.
drib-ble fum-ble whis-tle
The Playbook Decoding Strategy
When students encounter a challenging multisyllabic sports term:
1 Spot the Vowels: Underline the working vowels/vowel teams.
2 Look Between: Count the consonants between the vowels to determine the split.
3 Slice the Syllables: Split the word (e.g., separating VC/CV like bas-ket or keeping vowel teams together like team-mate ).
4 Dribble & Blend: Read each syllable slowly, then merge them rapidly "on the break."

2. Inferential: How does emotional control connect to playing good basketball? Why is Billy losing his control?
Differentiation & Accommodation Playbook
For Students Who Need Extra Support:
Provide physical syllable boards where students use plastic counters to "shoot" syllables into visual hoops before writing.
For English Language Learners:
Directly demonstrate sports verbs (e.g., *dribble*, *fumble*, *shatter*) with physical objects or gesture actions to anchor the vocabulary.
