Common Core Standards & Bottom Lines
Standards:
• RL.K.2: With prompting and support, retell familiar stories, including key details.
• RF.K.3 & RF.K.4: Read emergent-reader texts with purpose and understanding, tracking print 1-to-1.
• RL.K.5: Recognize common types of texts (picture storybooks).
Bottom Lines:
• Sequence: Telling what happens FIRST (beginning), THEN (middle), and LAST (end) of a story.
Materials & Lesson Signage
• Text: Go, Dog. Go! by P.D. Eastman
• Anchor Chart: First, Then, Last 3-Row Blank Glue Poster
• Cut-Out Pieces: Big Dog, Little Dog, Red Dog, Blue Dog, Green Dog, Tree Party
• Student Worksheet: Tap, Read & Draw (First, Then, Last)
Opening & Rollout 5 minutes
Hook
• TW say: “Look around our classroom! We see things that are big and small, red and blue! Today’s story is about all kinds of colorful dogs driving cars fast!” TW show front cover.
Sequencing Rollout
• TW say: “Today we are learning about Sequencing! Sequencing means telling what happened in the story from beginning, to middle, to the end using three magic words: FIRST, THEN, and LAST.” TW repeat 3 times and lead choral chant.
• CFU: “What three words help us sequence a story?” (First, Then, Last!)
• TW say: “How do good readers sequence? 1. Look at the pictures. 2. Read the words. 3. Use a sequence word. 4. Tell what happens!”
Text Preview
• TW say: “In Go, Dog. Go!, the illustrations show us each dog doing something special. Let’s keep our eyes open for who we meet FIRST, who we see THEN, and what happens LAST!”
I Do (Teacher Modeling FIRST) 8 minutes
• TW say: “Watch how I sequence the beginning of our book onto our Anchor Chart.”
• Pg. 1–9 (Think-Aloud): “Step 1: I look at the pictures. I see a giant Big Dog and a tiny Little Dog! Step 2: I read the words: ‘Big dog. Little dog. Big dogs and little dogs.’ Step 3: I pick my sequence word. Because this is the BEGINNING of the book, I always use FIRST!” TW point to the top row marked FIRST on the Anchor Chart.
• “Step 4: I tell what happened: FIRST, we meet the Big Dog and the Little Dog as they jump into their cars to drive!” TW glue the Big Dog & Little Dog cut-outs into the big empty FIRST row.
• CFU: “What word do we use for the beginning?” (FIRST!) “Who did we meet first?” (Big Dog and Little Dog!)

We Do (Guided Practice: THEN and LAST) 10 minutes
• TW say: “Now scholars, you are going to help me complete our Anchor Chart with THEN and LAST!”
• Middle of Story (Pg. 10–35): “Look at the new dogs! We have a Red Dog, a Blue Dog, and a Green Dog! They drive, work with tools, and ask about hats! What sequence word goes on our middle row?” (THEN!)
• “Who can sequence this moment?” (THEN, the Red Dog, Blue Dog, and Green Dog drive their cars, work, and play!) TW invite scholars to glue the Red Dog, Blue Dog, & Green Dog cut-outs into the empty THEN row.
• End of Story (Pg. 55–64): “Look! All the cars drive to a giant tree with long ladders! What is at the top? A giant party with banners and cakes!”
• “We reached the very END. What sequence word belongs on our bottom row?” (LAST!)
• “Let’s say the sentence together chorally: LAST, all the dogs climb into the tree for a big dog party!” TW invite scholars to glue the Tree Party cut-out into the empty LAST row.
You Do: Student Worksheet (Tap, Read & Draw) 5 minutes
• Directions: Distribute the Tap, Read & Draw Worksheet. Scholars tap each tracking dot with their finger to read the 2 sentences aloud. Then, scholars draw what happened First, Then, and Last in the three dedicated drawing frames.
• Teacher Circulation: Ensure scholars touch each dot as they read aloud before drawing.
Most Productive Struggle Prompts
Gap 1: Skipping words while reading without tracking dots.
Gap 2: Mixing up which event happened Then vs. Last.
Prompts:
• “Put your pointer finger right on the dot under the word. Tap as you say it!”
• “Look at sentence 1: What did the dogs do first? They got in cars!”
• “Look at sentence 2: What did all the dogs do last? They went up the tree!”
• “Look at our Anchor Chart on the wall to check your drawings in order.”
Check for Understanding & Wrap Up 2 minutes
• “What three sequence words did we master today?” (FIRST, THEN, LAST!)
• “What happened First in our sentences?” (First, the dogs went in cars.)
• “What happened Then?” (Then, they worked and played.)
• “What happened Last?” (Last, all the dogs had a party in the tree!)
