Instructional Rationale: Struggling 6th-grade readers often decode word-by-word with flat affect or race anxiously without comprehension. This lesson deploys an explicit, evidence-based 4-stage instructional sequence (Model → Echo → Repeated Practice → Timed Monitoring) to bridge decoding into automaticity and expressive prosody.
The 4-Stage Repeated Reading Protocol
1 Cold Read & Baseline 3 – 4 min
Student reads the fresh passage for exactly 60 seconds . Mark errors on the teacher tracking copy. Student marks the last word reached. Compute Cold WCPM. Record initial prosody score (1–4). Do not correct errors yet; gauge raw fluency.
2 Teacher Modeling (Prosody) 4 – 5 min
Pre-teach tricky multisyllabic words using the Syllable Radar box. Then read the entire passage aloud with rich expression, natural pacing, and deliberate pauses at commas/periods. Emphasize how punctuation dictates breathing and meaning.
3 Echo & Choral Phrasing 5 – 6 min
Read 2–3 sentence chunks aloud. Student tracks with finger or pencil and “echoes” immediately back, mimicking pitch, inflection, and cadence. Follow with one unison choral read of tricky paragraphs to solidify smooth phrasing.
4 Hot Read & Celebration 3 – 4 min
Conduct a final 60-second timed read. Compare Hot WCPM against Cold WCPM. Highlight accuracy jumps and prosody improvements. Celebrate quantifiable gains immediately on the visual Progress Tracker.

When the student reads like a robot:
“You read every single word correctly, but let’s make it sound like human talk. Scoop these words together: [into the dark ocean]. Say it like you’re telling me an exciting secret.”
When the student rushes and guesses words:
“Speed is not fluency. Fluent readers read smooth, not fast. Let’s tap out the syllables in this word together: pre-da-tor. Now slide it into the sentence smoothly.”
When the student makes a self-correction:
“Brilliant catch! You noticed that didn’t make sense and backed up to fix it. That is exactly what champion readers do. Notice how much smoother that second read sounded.”
Recommended 3-Day Implementation Schedule
Day 1: Passage 1 (Deep Sea Glow). Cold read, syllable prep, echo read, hot read. Graph Trial 1 vs 3.
Day 2: Passage 2 (Ghost Army). Partner echo modeling, targeted prosody coaching, second repeated timing.
