Built for the Sky: Amazing Bird Adaptations
Read carefully
Birds are remarkable creatures built specifically for life in the air and outdoors. One amazing feature is their bones. Unlike human bones, which are heavy and solid, bird bones are hollow with tiny air pockets inside. This makes their skeletons lightweight so they can take off and soar easily. Birds also have thousands of feathers that serve two major jobs. Outer feathers are smooth and waterproof to keep birds dry during heavy rain, while fluffy inner down feathers trap body heat to keep them warm in freezing temperatures. Finally, birds do not have teeth; instead, their beaks are shaped for their exact diet. A sparrow has a short, thick beak to crack tough seeds, while a hummingbird has a long, slender beak like a straw to sip flower nectar. Every part of a bird works together to help it survive!
