Lesson Objective
Students will be able to transform a question into a strong, complete-sentence starter (restatement) by dropping question words, rearranging key vocabulary, and preparing a slot for their answer.

Instructional Pathway
Step 1: The Acoustic Hook

Introduce the concept of an echo. Explain that in writing, a strong response doesn't let the question disappear—it echoes the question back to the reader so they know exactly what is being discussed.
Teacher Script: "Imagine I walk up to you and suddenly shout, 'Chocolate chip cookies!' You’d look at me confused. Why? Because you didn't hear the question! But if I say, 'My favorite type of cookie is chocolate chip,' you immediately know what I'm talking about. That's the power of the Echo."
Step 2: Demystifying the RACE Framework

Connect restating to the broader RACE framework (Restate, Answer, Cite, Explain). Clarify that R (Restate) and A (Answer) are best friends—they always sit together in the very first sentence of a paragraph.
Show that by restating, students build a bridge for their reader. Highlight that a restatement never answers the question yet—it simply sets up the answer.
Step 3: The Echo Formula (Direct Instruction)

Display the Echo Power Anchor Chart. Walk students through the three tactical rules to transform questions into statements:
Rule 1
Drop the Question Word
Cross out Who, What, Why, How, Where.
Rule 2
Rearrange & Keep
Keep the key nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
Rule 3
Build the Slot
Add a connector like "is" or "because" at the end.

Step 4: Interactive Sound Waves (Guided Practice)

Write sample questions on the board. Work as a class to underline key terms and strike through question words using different colors. Have students write their restatements on individual whiteboards.
Example Walkthrough:
Question: "Why did the characters go to the park?"
Step 1: Cross out Why did.
Step 2: Gather remaining words: the characters go to the park.
Step 3: Adjust verb tense & echo: The characters went to the park because...
Step 5: Solo Broadcast (Independent Practice)

Distribute the Echo Power Worksheet. Have students complete the scaffolded exercises individually. Monitor specifically for students who try to answer the question immediately without restating, or who copy the question word.
Common Pitfalls & Correction Strategies
1. Answering Too Early
Symptom: Students write "Because they wanted to play."
Fix: Remind them that "Because" cannot start a response sentence. Use the hand-clap technique: "No start with because!"
2. Keeping Question Words
Symptom: "Why the characters went to the park is..."
Fix: Physically have the student fold or tape over the question word on their sheet, forcing them to start with the noun.
Differentiation & Extension
Support
Provide sentence starters with the question words pre-crossed out. Use color-coded highlighter strips (Yellow for question words to remove, Green for nouns to copy).
Extension
Have students write their own reading comprehension questions, trade with a partner, and write peer-validated restatements. Introduce hard-mode questions (e.g., metaphors).

What is an Echo?
Like sound bouncing off a canyon wall, an Echo Statement bounces the question back to the reader as a statement. It prepares the reader to receive your answer!
The 3-Step Echo Formula

Slash the question words and helpers at the very beginning of the sentence.

The Golden Rule of Echoing
Never start your answer with "Because..."! A complete response must have a solid noun/verb skeleton before explaining why.
