What is dialogue? Dialogue is the exact words a character speaks out loud! Use quotation marks (“ ”) to hug the spoken words and commas (,) to separate the speech from the speaker tag.
The 3 Big Rules for Commas & Quotes
Rule 1 Tag at Front
Comma comes after the tag word. Capitalize the first spoken word!
Leo warned, “That burrito just giggled!”
Rule 2 Tag at End
Put a comma inside the closing quote. Tag word starts lowercase.
“Burritos cannot talk,” Maya scoffed.
Rule 3 Split Tag
Comma inside first quote, comma after tag. 2nd half stays lowercase!
“Listen,” whispered Leo, “it knows my name.”
Model Dissection: Where Punctuation Hugs Words
“Do not touch the blue button,” screamed Maya.

Common Misconceptions & Feedback Cues
Trap 1: Comma Placement
Students often put commas outside quotes (”,). Remind them: punctuation goes inside the quotes like a warm hug!
Trap 2: Capitalizing Tags
Students often write “Hello,” Said Leo. Point out that the sentence is not over yet, so the tag verb stays lowercase.
Trap 3: Split Tag Commas
Students often forget the second comma after the tag in interrupted quotes (Maya pleaded, “do...). Both commas are required.
