Why Build Bridges?
Without Transitions:
"I like pizza. It is unhealthy. I eat it every Friday. My doctor is worried."
With Transitions:
"I like pizza, even though it is unhealthy. Consequently, I only eat it every Friday so that my doctor won't worry as much."
Transitions guide the reader through your logic.
They prevent "choppy" writing.
They show the relationship between sentences.
The Addition Beam
Use these when you want to add information or reinforce a point.
Furthermore
Adds a stronger, more important point.
Moreover
Adds information that supports the same idea.
In addition
A neutral way to list another fact.
"The new park will provide green space; furthermore, it will create jobs for local youth."
The Contrast Pivot
Use these to show a change in direction or a difference.
Conversely
Shows the exact opposite of the previous statement.
Nevertheless
Means "in spite of that." Shows a surprising contrast.
On the other hand
Presents a second, different viewpoint.
Alternatively
Suggests a different choice or possibility.
The Cause/Effect Chain
CAUSE
EFFECT
Consequently
"As a result of this..."
Accordingly
"In a way that fits the situation..."
Building Code: Punctuation
Rule #1: The Semicolon Bridge
Use a semicolon before the transition and a comma after when connecting two sentences.
Rule #2: The Sentence Starter
Use a comma after the transition when it starts a new sentence.

The Site Inspection (Hook) 5-10 Min
Display a "choppy" paragraph on the board (see Slide 2). Ask students why it feels like a robot wrote it. Discuss how the lack of "bridges" makes the reader work harder to understand the logic. Introduce the Bridge Builders metaphor.

Building the Framework (Instruction) 15 Min
Use the Bridge Builders Slides to introduce the three logical categories. Students should reference the Logical Links Anchor Chart as you go.
Key Point to Stress:

Reinforcement Drill (Guided) 15 Min
Hand out the Connection Construction Worksheet. Complete Part 1 (Multiple Choice) together as a class, discussing the "logic" of each choice. Model the first sentence of Part 2 on the board to demonstrate the semicolon usage.
