Beat of Both Teacher Guide
Beat of Both
Instructional Guide • Pre-K Sight Words
Word: BOTH
Duration
40 Minutes
Objective
Memorize 'both' through musical spelling and movement.
Materials
Rhythm sticks, Large letter cards, Play-dough mats.
1. ABC Warm-up (5 min)
Singing
Gather students in a circle. Sing the classic ABC song to activate letter recognition. Encourage clapping on each letter to establish a steady beat.
2. Video Rhythm (10 min)
Multimedia
Watch "The Both Song" twice. Use the pauses below for interactive teaching moments:
0:33 • Spelling Phase
"B-O-T-H... B-O-T-H..."
Pause video. Ask students to air-write the letters B-O-T-H in the sky along with the beat.
1:05 • Contextual Sentences
"Dogs and cats. They both are pets."
Pause after "Dogs and cats." Ask: "What is true about BOTH dogs and cats?"
1:09 • Categorization
"Ants and bees. They both are insects."
Ask: "What else are they both?" (small, living, have legs).
1:17 • Nouns vs Adjectives
"Babies and bunnies. They both are cute."
Explain that "both" describes what things ARE (nouns) or what they are LIKE (adjectives).
Second Viewing: Distribute rhythm sticks or shakers. Have students play along with the beat.
3. Floor Spelling (15 min)
Physical Activity
Scatter large printed letter cards (B, O, T, H) on the floor in a random pile.
The Race: Divide students into small teams. Call out a letter ("Find the letter B!"). Once all four letters are found, students must line them up in order to build the word BOTH.
4. Circle Chant (5 min)
Closure
Sit in a circle. Lead the class in the "Volume Chant":
- Round 1: Shout "B-O-T-H spells BOTH!"
- Round 2: Use a normal speaking voice.
- Round 3: Use a tiny mouse whisper.
5. Sensory Extension
Sensory
Provide Doughy Both Mats. Students roll "snakes" of play-dough to form the letters B-O-T-H.
Challenge: Can you find 2 things in the classroom that are BOTH the same color?
"Dogs and cats. They both are pets. Ants and bees. They both are insects."
