[0:52] Prediction
Pause after the definition. Ask students what "redefines or clarifies" might look like in a sentence.
[1:15] The Essential Test
Pause on "Griselda". Ask: "If we remove the name, is the sentence still complete?" (Checks non-essential understanding).
[1:45] Placement Prediction
Pause before the "Cookie Cat" comma appears. Ask where the comma should go when the appositive is at the end.
Key Vocabulary
Antecedent: The noun that came before.
Appositive: The extra info being 'put on'.

Common "Surgical Complications" (Misconceptions)
The Missing Second Bandage: Students often forget the second comma when the appositive is in the middle.
The "Is" Infection: Students might try to write "The dog is a golden retriever barked." Remind them an appositive doesn't need "is"—it just renames the noun.
Antecedent Amnesia: Ensure the appositive is placed directly next to the noun it clarifies.

The Medical Definition

A noun phrase that clarifies or redefines its antecedent.
Antecedent
The noun that comes before and is being renamed.
My older sister, Griselda, is going to college.

Comma Bandages
, ,
The Double Stitched
If the appositive is in the middle of the sentence, it needs a comma before AND after.
, .
The Final Stitch
If the appositive is at the end of the sentence, it only needs one comma before it.
The "Non-Essential" Rule: If you take the appositive out, the sentence should still make perfect sense!
Operation: Sentence Surgery
1 Locate the antecedent (the noun that needs more detail).
2 Use a caret ^ to "cut" the sentence open next to the noun.
3 Insert your appositive with the correct comma "bandages".
4 Perform a Stability Check : Read the sentence without the appositive. Does it still work?
