Draft Doctors Teacher Guide Department of Writing Medicine Emergency Triage
DRAFT DOCTORS TEACHER GUIDE
PROTOCOL ID: #DD-9012-REWRITE
OBJECTIVE Diagnose, restructure, and perform "surgery" on a broken essay.
Clinical Specs
Grade Level: 6th - 9th Grade
Focus Skill: Essay Structure
Focus Skill 2: Transitions & Flow
Duration: 60 - 90 Minutes
Grouping: Pairs / "Surgical Teams"
Teacher Prep Checklist
Print 1x Patient Files per student.
Print 1x Rebuilding Organizer per pair.
Display the Anchor Chart on screen.
Get red pens & highlighters ("scalpels").
Activating the Persona
Leverage the medical roleplay to build high student engagement:
"Doctors, we have a critical patient in the ER. Code Red! The patient is a persuasive essay with shattered paragraphs, a misplaced heart (thesis), and no internal flow. We must diagnose its injuries and rebuild it before it flatlines!"
Tip: Wear scrubs or a lab coat to class to instantly hook your students!
The Pacing Protocol
10 Min
Phase 1: Emergency Intake (Hook & Anchor)
Project the Triage Anchor Chart . Teach the 4 key organs of an essay (Hook, Thesis, Transitions, Restatement). Frame poor organization as a life-threatening ailment.
15 Min
Phase 2: Initial Diagnosis (Analyzing the Patient)
Students examine the "Sick Draft" in the Patient File . Use highlighters to spot structural failures (e.g., body paragraph arguments masquerading as introductions, missing thesis, off-topic rants).
25 Min
Phase 3: Skeletal Surgery (The Rebuild)
In surgical pairs, students use the Rebuilding Graphic Organizer to transplant the pieces into their correct order and perform "structural skin grafts" (writing transition phrases).
10 Min
Phase 4: Post-Op Evaluation (Grading)
Teams evaluate their newly stabilized, healthy drafts using the Triage Rubric . Discuss why the new layout flows better than the "terminal" original draft.
Critical Diagnostic Misconceptions:
Students often mistake the first sentence they write for a hook, and the first paragraph for an introduction. Teach them that a true introduction maps out the arguments, while body paragraphs explore them individually.

PATIENT STATUS Stabilized
Patient Paragraph Injuries
Paragraph A Surgical Diagnosis: Body 1
Injuries: Opens abruptly without a transition. Discusses teamwork but drifts into a rant about how teammate "Robby" got disconnected.
Remedy: Relocate to Body 1. Amputate Robby anecdote. Insert transition like "First and foremost, video games foster deep..."
Paragraph B Surgical Diagnosis: Thesis & Map
Injuries: This paragraph contains the key arguments (history/science, teamwork, focus) and the actual claim, but it's hidden near the bottom!
Remedy: Extract and combine with a hook to build the brand new Introduction Paragraph .
Paragraph C Surgical Diagnosis: Fluff / Intro Draft
Injuries: Highly informal. Explains writer's Level 50 Wizard and Minecraft house. Lacks clear hook or organization map.
Remedy: Amputate the wizard level. Repurpose as raw background material for a hook, but strip the excessive slang.
Paragraph D Surgical Diagnosis: Counter/Concl.
Injuries: Addresses a counterargument ("eyes rot") but has a weak counter-claim ("fast hands"). Lacks call to action or true closure.
Remedy: Reconstruct as the Conclusion Paragraph . Inject formal medical counterargument (brain plasticity) and a direct call to action.
The Surgical Blueprint (Correct Rebuild)
1. REBUILT INTRO
Hook: Over 90% of children spend hours navigating complex digital environments weekly, yet classrooms ignore this potential...
Thesis: Schools must establish a weekly video game class because games teach science and history, build teamwork, and improve cognitive problem-solving.
2. REBUILT BODY 1
Topic Sentence: First and foremost , interactive video games act as highly engaging interactive history and science classrooms.
Evidence: Minecraft Education allows construction of Roman coliseums, and space-flight sims teach real physics.
3. REBUILT BODY 2
Topic Sentence: In addition to individual educational content, multiplayer games foster advanced professional teamwork.
Evidence: Players coordinate real-time defense, assign roles, and solve shared puzzles under strict deadlines.
4. REBUILT CONCLUSION
Counter + Rebuttal: Critics argue screen-time is harmful, but scientific research demonstrates that strategic gameplay increases spatial reasoning.
Call to Action: It is time for administrators to stop treating games as toys and utilize them as textbooks.
Diagnostic Hint: Remind students that transitions are like ligaments and joints —they hold the bone-dry paragraphs together so the entire essay can move fluidly!

The 4 Vital Organs of an Essay
If any of these organs are missing, flatlining, or out of place, your essay cannot survive!
1. THE HOOK (The Brain)
Located at the very beginning . Captures interest with a dramatic stat, a vivid scene, or a surprising question. Never start dry!
2. THE THESIS (The Heart)
The core claim of your writing. Tells the reader exactly what you believe and lists your main reasons in a single powerful sentence.
3. TRANSITIONS (The Joints)
Bridges that connect ideas (e.g., "First and foremost," "Consequently," "In contrast" ). Without them, the reader trips and falls.
4. EVIDENCE (The Muscle)
Real facts, examples, statistics, and scientific reasoning that support each claim. Weak muscles mean your essay falls flat.
Surgical Protocol
Perform these 3 steps in exact medical sequence:
1
DIAGNOSE IT
Scan the draft. Find and circle the misplaced Heart (Thesis) . Highlight and flag broken joints (transitions) and infectious rants (irrelevant sentences) .
2
TRANSPLANT IT
Move paragraphs into correct anatomical order: Intro (Hook + Thesis) → Body 1 → Body 2 → Conclusion (Call to Action) . Amputate useless fluff!
3
SUTURE & REBUILD
Inject transition words into paragraph seams. Rewrite fragmented sentences into stable, professional prose. Give the draft immediate strength!
WARNING: Raw drafts without transitions will block comprehension pathways!

Special Directives:
The patient is an argumentative essay titled "Play to Learn" . Its paragraphs have been severely scrambled. Your mission is to read the patient file, diagnose its structural wounds, and isolate its core components.
PARAGRAPH A
First of all, multiplayer games make you a genius teammate. When you play with your friends, you have to talk in headphones and plan how to beat the level. My friend Robby got disconnected once because his dog ate his router, and it was so funny. But anyway, teamwork is important. That's why games build great skills for real jobs, because at real jobs people also talk to each other.
PARAGRAPH B
These games teach history and science and math, and also they force you to work in teams. Schools should make video games a weekly class subject. Playing games actually makes kids smarter, builds their social skills, and trains their focus. That's my main point here.
PARAGRAPH C
Video games are pretty cool. Almost every kid I know plays them. In fact, I have a Level 50 wizard in Dragon Quest and my armor is super shiny. My cousin plays Minecraft all night and built a whole castle out of lava. People say they are bad but they are awesome.
PARAGRAPH D
Some old teachers think video games are a waste of time and make your brain turn to pudding. But they are completely wrong. Research doesn't even say that. Also, playing games makes your thumbs really fast. If schools don't let us play games, class is going to stay extremely boring forever.

1 LOCATING THE HEART (THESIS STATEMENT)
The core claim (thesis) of this essay is currently buried deep in the wrong paragraph. Which paragraph is it in, and what is the exact sentence?
PARAGRAPH ID (A, B, C, or D):
EXACT THESIS SENTENCE:
2 SPOTTING THE INFECTIONS (OFF-TOPIC RANTS)
Good essays stick to their topic. Find two sentences that are completely off-topic (e.g., video game wizard levels, cousin's castle, friend's router) and write them below so we can amputate them.

Skeletal Spine Structure & Order
Paragraphs remain completely out of order; main claims are missing or misplaced.
Essay follows basic chronological order, but paragraph flow is awkward.
All paragraphs are correctly placed (Intro → Body 1 → Body 2 → Conclusion).
Logical structure flows perfectly with robust thesis map and engaging introduction.
Ligaments / Joints Transitions
No transition words are used; sentence flow is highly disjointed and difficult to read.
Simple transitions used (e.g., "And", "Also") but feel highly repetitive or robotic.
Appropriate transition words bridge paragraphs smoothly at key organizational joints.
Transitions are natural and highly varied, establishing excellent persuasive pacing.
Cellular Health Tone & Focus
Parasitic off-topic rants remain; heavy use of slang and informal jargon.
Slang is removed, but some off-topic filler sentences or personal pronouns remain.
Off-topic fluff is completely amputated; essay maintains a steady, formal academic tone.
Crisp, elite academic tone throughout; vocabulary is highly professional and objective.
Vitals & Muscle Evidence
Claims are entirely unsupported; counterarguments are ignored or unaddressed.
Claims have basic evidence, but counterarguments are weak or poorly rebutted.
Claims are backed by concrete academic evidence; includes a valid counterargument.
Claims are supported by elite evidence; incorporates a highly polished, advanced rebuttal.
Post-Op Self Assessment Checklist
All 4 paragraphs restructured?
Off-topic fluff amputated?
Thesis located & moved?
Strong transitions injected?
Clean copy written neatly on the rebuild log?
