Common Structural Hurdles
1. Mixing Facts (Evidence) with Explanation:
3rd graders struggle to separate hard numbers from explanations. Remind them to look for concrete counting numbers like "one hundred thousand" or "two hundred thousand" to find the Evidence beam.
2. Sorting Topic vs. Closing Sentences:
Both sentences name the main subject. Encourage them to scan for clue words at the start of closing sentences, such as "In short" or "Therefore" to find the Tie-up.
3. Combining Different Topics:
Before gluing, have the student group all the "Dog" sentences on the left and all the "Bee" sentences on the right. This makes sorting by paragraph structure much easier.
Kid-Friendly Prompting Prompts
To guide them to the Topic (T):
"Which sentence introduces our animal topic to a reader who has never heard of it before? Where does the story start?"
To guide them to Evidence (E):
"Do you see a sentence with a big number or a scientific fact? What is the proof that the scientists discovered?"
To guide them to Explanation (X):
"Now that we know that amazing fact, how does it help the animal in real life? Why does that number matter?"
