What is "Release"?
In Jonas's community, there are only two circumstances where release is not a punishment:
Release of the elderly (celebrating a long life)
Release of a newborn (failing to thrive)
"For any other citizen, release is a devastating, final punishment."

Release is treated like a severe social expulsion, yet we don't fully see what happens after someone is sent "elsewhere".
The pilot who flew off-course was scheduled for immediate release—showing how zero-tolerance the society is for errors.
