Student Instructions: Read the two historical passages below. Use your active reading strategies (underlining key words or clues). After reading, answer the questions on the next page to help your teacher see what you already know about finding main ideas!
Passage 1: From Georgia to California
A Long Journey Westward
Jackie Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia, in 1919. At that time, his mother, Mallie Robinson, worked incredibly hard as a sharecropper but struggled to make ends meet in the segregated South. Seeking a better life and safer opportunities for her five children, Mallie made a brave decision. In 1920, she packed their few belongings and boarded a train heading west to Pasadena, California.
The move was not easy. In Pasadena, the Robinsons were the only African American family on their block. They faced intense racial prejudice from neighbors who did not want them there. Despite these harsh challenges, Mallie refused to back down. She bought a home on Pepper Street and taught her children the values of hard work, respect, and deep family resolve.
Passage 2: The Bruin Powerhouse
Excellence in Every Arena
When Jackie Robinson went to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), he proved to be one of the greatest athletes the country had ever seen. He was not just good at baseball; he was a powerhouse in almost every sport he tried. Jackie became the first student in UCLA history to earn varsity letters in four different sports during a single school year: football, basketball, track and field, and baseball.
On the football field, he was a star running back who led the nation in average yards per carry. On the basketball court, he was the leading scorer in his conference. In track, he won national championships in the long jump. Surprisingly, baseball was actually considered his "weakest" sport at the time. Through his sheer athletic achievements, Jackie broke records and gained national attention.

TEACHER ROADMAP
Scoring & Pathway Placement Rubric
SCAFFOLD A: Text Features
Criteria: Student struggles to find the overall main idea (misses Q1) AND cannot produce details (scores 0-1 on Q2). Showed little to no awareness of how titles/subheadings help (Q3).
RECOMMENDED: 2+ grade levels below
SCAFFOLD B: Connecting Details
Criteria: Student can identify the main idea with support (correct or close on Q1) but struggles to systematically link multiple key details back to the main idea.
RECOMMENDED: 1 grade level below
1 Question 1: Multiple Choice Answer
Correct Choice: B
"Mallie Robinson made a brave move to California to find a better life, where she raised her children with strong family values despite facing racial prejudice."
Rationale: Option B is the only choice that captures both paragraphs of Passage 1—covering the migration west (Paragraph 1) and the resilience of Mallie and her family in Pasadena (Paragraph 2). Other options are narrow, isolated key details.
2 Question 2: Supporting Details Key
Acceptable Supporting Details (Any 2 of the following):
Jackie earned letters in four varsity sports (football, basketball, track, and baseball) in a single year.
On the football field, he was a star running back who led the nation in yards per carry.
On the basketball court, he was the conference's leading scorer.
In track, he won national championships in the long jump.
Scoring Note: Award 1 point for each distinct, text-based detail that links to his UCLA athletic performance. Do not award points for details about Cairo, Georgia or Pepper Street.
3 Question 3: Text Features Strategy
Model Response:
"The subheading 'Excellence in Every Arena' tells me that Jackie Robinson is going to succeed or do incredibly well in multiple different places or sports. It prepares me to look for details about all the sports he played at UCLA."
Diagnostic Look-For: Check if the student mentions that a subheading gives "clues," "titles," or "summarizes" the text section. Even basic phrasing like "it tells me what the story is about" indicates developing awareness.

Reading Passage: The Canadian Gateway
Montreal Trials and Triumphs
Before joining the Brooklyn Dodgers, Jackie Robinson was sent to play for their minor league team, the Montreal Royals, in 1946. Montreal, Canada, was a crucial stepping stone. It was here that Branch Rickey wanted to test how Jackie would handle professional pitching and hostile crowds, while playing in a city that was generally more welcoming and less segregated than cities in the United States.
The season was a spectacular success. Jackie led the league with a .349 batting average and was named the league's Most Valuable Player (MVP). Fans in Montreal quickly grew to love his playing style—his speed on the bases and his incredible skill at the plate. When Montreal won the championship, enthusiastic fans cheered and chased Jackie down the street in celebration, proving that Jackie was fully prepared for the challenges of the major leagues.
1 What is the overall main idea of the passage above?
A Jackie Robinson had a .349 batting average and won the league's MVP award.
B Branch Rickey sent Jackie to Canada to try professional pitching.
C Jackie Robinson's season in Montreal was a highly successful stepping stone that proved he was fully ready for the major leagues.

Diagnostic Goal: Assess if students are beginning to internalize finding the main idea independently. Use this formative score to decide whether students can be transitioned from Scaffold A (Text Features) to Scaffold B (Connecting Details) for the remaining content lessons.
1 Question 1: Overall Main Idea Correct Choice
Correct Answer: C
"Jackie Robinson's season in Montreal was a highly successful stepping stone that proved he was fully ready for the major leagues."
Rationale: Option C encapsulates both of the passage's primary focus areas: why he was sent to Montreal (Paragraph 1) and his outstanding athletic/popular success there (Paragraph 2). Other options represent narrow, supportive data blocks.
2 Question 2: Supporting Details Look-Fors
Acceptable Supporting Evidence (Any 2):
Jackie Robinson led the league with a .349 batting average.
He was named the minor league's Most Valuable Player (MVP).
Fans in Montreal loved his fast-paced base running and great hits.
Montreal won the championship, and fans enthusiastically celebrated and chased him down the street.

Passage 1: The Final Retirement
Stepping Down with Pride
In January 1957, Jackie Robinson officially retired from major league baseball. At thirty-eight years old, his body had taken a severe beating from years of intense play, hard running, and the heavy emotional stress of breaking racial barriers. Although many teams still wanted him, Jackie chose to exit the diamond while he was still respected as an elite competitor.
Retirement did not mean stopping. Jackie immediately accepted a position as an executive for Chock Full o' Nuts, becoming the first African American vice president of a major American corporation. He proved that the determination, focus, and leadership skills he practiced on the baseball field could lead to massive success in the corporate business world.
Passage 2: A Living Monument
An Enduring American Legacy
The legacy of Jackie Robinson reaches far beyond sports statistics. In 1997, Major League Baseball took the unprecedented step of retiring his jersey number, 42, across every single professional team in the country. No other player in baseball history will ever wear number 42 on their back. Every year on April 15, players across the country wear his number to honor his struggle.
Jackie Robinson proved to a segregated nation that character, resolve, and poise could defeat hatred. His courageous efforts paved the way for the Civil Rights legislation of the 1960s and inspired generations of minority athletes, leaders, and citizens to fight for equal opportunities in every aspect of American life.
