Anatomy of an Enthymeme
What is it?
A syllogism in which one of the premises is unspoken or implied.
Why hide it?
It's common knowledge (too obvious to say).
It's controversial (hiding a weak link).
Efficiency (brevity in speech).

Modus Tollens
In Argumentative Writing:
"If the candidate was honest about their taxes, they would have released the returns. They haven't released them. Therefore, they are not being honest."

Structural Failures
Just because the sentence sounds smart doesn't mean the logic holds.
Affirming the Consequent

False: The sprinkler could be on!
Denying the Antecedent
"If you work hard, you'll succeed. You didn't work hard, so you won't succeed."
False: You could just be lucky!

Students are assessed on their ability to maintain a valid deductive chain under questioning. Rhetorical flair, emotional appeals, and "flowery" language are explicitly excluded from the score. The focus is purely on structural integrity and premise acceptability.
