Lesson Mission
Students take on the role of "Sound Detectives" to hunt for hidden diphthong clues around the room. By combining movement with orthographic mapping, students match visual context clues with the correct spellings of the /ow/ and /aw/ sounds.

Warmup: Sound Signals
Introduce the sound-spelling correspondences using the slide deck. Teach multi-sensory gestures:
ou / ow: Pinch arm gently and say "Ouch!" (/ow/)au / aw: Put hands to mouth, pretend to yawn, and say "Awww" (/aw/)

The Movement Hunt: Sound Scavengers
Hand out the Detective Logs and clipboards. Give students their first clue location. They must find the matching animal footprint card hidden in the designated zone.
Rules of the Hunt:
Walk silently like real jungle explorers.
Once you locate a card, study the picture and read the word with the missing blank.
Determine which diphthong completes the word, write it in your log under the correct animal paw print column, and write the full word.

The Safari Wrap-up
Reconvene at the small group table. Review each card as a group. Have students practice calling out the diphthong and decoding the completed words with their hand gestures.
Setup & Teacher Prep
Print the 12 Scavenger Hunt cards in color, cut them out, and laminate if desired.
Tape cards around your small group area or back-of-room within safe walking distances. Keep them at eye level.
Prepare a clipboard, a pencil, and a Detective Log for each student.
Common Misconceptions
ou vs ow:
Students often confuse where these go. Reinforce that ow is frequently used at the end of words or syllables (cow, how) or before /l/ or /n/ (clown, brown).
au vs aw:
aw is typically found at the end of a word (saw, jaw) or before /n/ or /l/ (lawn, crawl), while au is almost never at the end of a English word (sauce, launch).

Differentiation Strategies
For Extra Support:
Pair students so they work in duos to bounce phonetic ideas off each other. Provide a small card showing "ow/ou" with a picture of a bandage, and "au/aw" with a picture of a yawning dog as a desk reference.
For an Extra Challenge:
Students who finish early can write a short sentence on the back of their Detective Log using at least three words they discovered during the hunt.

The Hawk's Loud Squawk

Paul is a big, brown hawk with sharp claws. He likes to soar over the green lawn.
Down on the ground, a small brown mouse runs around.
"Look down!" squawks Paul.
Just then, a tiger begins to prowl. The tiger is brown and proud. Paul lets out a loud squawk to warn the mouse.
The mouse hears the sound. He runs into his small house.
The tiger looks around and yawns. "I missed the mouse," says the tiger. Paul flies high, happy to help his friend.

Students play in pairs. Teach them to use a pencil and a paperclip to spin. When landing on a space (e.g., cl__n), they must determine the correct spelling (ow), read the completed word aloud, and perform the silly forest action. Both players write down their words on their Detective logs.

Use a dry-erase board to segment sound parts. Ask: "Does /ou/ or /ow/ usually go in the middle of a word before an 'n'?" (ow). Re-prompt with visual cue cards showing pictures.
Extension / High-Flyers:
Ask students to write their own short silly story featuring at least 3 of the words they landed on during the Board Game.
Success Criteria Check
Ensure students are mapping spelling structures properly: /ou/ and /ow/ make the same sound but follow distinct location rules; /au/ and /aw/ map to the identical "claw" vowel digraph.
