Teaching Notes & Common Misconceptions
Protagonist vs. "Hero"
Students often assume the protagonist must be inherently morally good. Clarify that the protagonist is simply the central driver of the narrative arc, not always a hero (e.g., antiheroes).
Antagonist Opposition
Remind students that an antagonist creates the central obstacle for the protagonist. While often a person, antagonistic forces can also be nature, society, or internal struggle.
Setting = Time + Place
Students frequently forget the "when". Emphasize that setting includes historical era, season, time of day, and weather—not just the physical location.
Quick Debrief / Exit Questions
1
Plot vs. Setting: "How can a sudden change in setting directly trigger the next event in the plot?"
2
Secondary Roles: "Name one secondary character from our current class read-aloud and describe how they help or challenge the protagonist."
