Teacher: Ms. Elena Vance
Subject: ELA / English Grammar
Day(s): Sept 8, 2026 (45 Min Review)
Unit: Grammar Foundations & Sentence Syntax Architecture
Topic: The 8 Parts of Speech Comprehensive Review (Form & Function)
Learning Objective: SWBAT define, identify, and analyze the grammatical functions of all 8 parts of speech (noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, interjection) within authentic mentor sentences with at least 80% accuracy.
Standards Addressed: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.7.1 & L.8.1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking; explain the function of phrases and clauses in sentences.
Academic Vocabulary:
- Noun: Person, place, thing, or abstract idea.
- Pronoun: Replaces a noun to eliminate repetition.
- Verb: Asserts an action, occurrence, or state of being.
- Adjective: Modifies/describes a noun or pronoun.
- Adverb: Modifies a verb, adjective, or other adverb.
- Preposition: Shows position, direction, or time relation.
- Conjunction: Connects words, phrases, or clauses.
- Interjection: Expresses sudden emotion or surprise.
Materials/Resources:
- Anchor Reference Chart: 8 Parts of Speech Quick-Finder (laminated desk strips).
- Color Highlighter Pack: 4 dual-ended highlighters per table pod for syntax coding.
- Sentence Strips: 12 printed mentor sentence strips for paired detective work.
- Smartboard Display: Interactive slides with animated color-bracketed breakdown.
- Formative Slips: Printed quarter-sheet Exit Tickets (1 per student).
LESSON:
Do Now (3-5 minutes): Target: 4 Minutes
Board Prompt (Students write in Grammar Do-Now Journals):
"Quickly, the energetic puppy dashed through the open gate, and wow, he was free!"
- Identify one action word and one naming word.
- Identify one describing word and tell which word it modifies.
- What emotion or feeling does the word "wow" express?
Teacher Action:
Circulate immediately with an observation stamp to assess entry-level recognition of basic parts; target 3 specific student journals for warm-call sharing.
Student Routine:
Silent, independent writing upon entering. Transition automatically when timer chimes; prepare to read aloud identified words.

I Do - Mini-Lesson (5-12 minutes): Allocated: 8 Minutes
Core Instructional Anchor: "Words do not have fixed identities—words have jobs. You cannot determine a word's part of speech in isolation; you must examine how it behaves in its sentence context."
The 4 Functional Families:
- Naming / Actors: Noun (anchor), Pronoun (substitute)
- Power / Action: Verb (the engine of the predicate)
Connectors & Modifiers:
- Modifiers: Adjective (decorates noun), Adverb (tells how/when/where)
- Connectors: Preposition (bridge), Conjunction (glue), Interjection (spark)
Explicit Teacher Modeling (Step-by-Step Think-Aloud on SmartBoard):
"Quietly, an old tortoise crawled toward the pond, and oh, he arrived safely."
1. Engines: crawled, arrived (Verbs). 2. Actors: tortoise (Noun), he (Pronoun). 3. Modifiers: old (Adjective); Quietly, safely (Adverbs). 4. Bridge: toward the pond (Preposition). 5. Glue: and (Conjunction) & Emotion: oh (Interjection).
STUDENT WORK TIME (25-35 minutes)
WE Do - Class Modeling Activity: Allocated: 10 Minutes
Interactive "Sentence Autopsy" & Call-and-Response Tagging:
"Yikes! The muddy cleats slipped off the bench, but Diego cleaned them thoroughly."
1. Call-and-Response Verification: Teacher points to "Yikes!"—class calls out part & reason in unison ("Interjection! Expresses reaction/shock").
2. Partner Talk Probe (Turn & Talk - 90 seconds): "Look at off and bench. Is off an adverb or a preposition here? How do you know?" Teacher listens for students identifying the noun phrase the bench serving as the object of the preposition.
3. The 'Chameleon Word' Misconception Buster: Show students how clean changes jobs:
• "Diego cleaned them" (Action Verb) vs. "Diego wore a clean jersey" (Adjective modifying jersey).
YOU Do - Small Group/Independent Work and Learning Tasks: Allocated: 15 Minutes
Part A: Paired Syntax Strips (8 Mins)
Student pairs receive a set of 5 challenge strips. They highlight and label 8 targeted underlined words across the sentences. Partners must debate and agree on both the part of speech and its exact grammatical function before recording on their clipboard sheet.
Accountability: Random reporter protocol for debrief.
Part B: Independent Sentence Creation (7 Mins)
Working individually, each student constructs an original "All-8 Grand Sentence" that correctly embeds at least one of every part of speech. Students draw visual color brackets over every word labeling its part of speech (N, PRO, V, ADJ, ADV, PREP, CONJ, INT).
Success Criterion: 8 out of 8 accurately positioned.
Teacher Small-Group Targeted Huddle: While the class works, pull 4 students flagged during Do-Now for an intensive 5-minute tactile sorting task isolating prepositions versus adverbs using physical word cards.
VERBAL CLOSING (1 minute):
Closing Synthesis Choral Call: Teacher asks: "Class, what gives a word its part of speech?" Students respond chorally: "Its job inside the sentence!" Fast round-robin shout-out of the 8 parts.
Re-anchors the functional purpose of grammar review.
DAILY FORMATIVE: (1-2 minutes):
Exit Ticket on Slip: "In the sentence: 'Hooray! We excitedly walked across the bridge and cheered,' identify the parts of speech for excitedly and across. State the job of each word."
Collected at door; 80% benchmark (2/2 correct) indicates readiness.

DIFFERENTIATION:
High and low students:
Struggling / Below-Level Students (Tier 2):
- Provide laminated "Cheat-Sheet Bookmarks" with diagnostic questions (e.g., "Which one?", "How?").
- Pre-highlight prepositions in brackets so students isolate core subject-verb patterns first.
- Strategic mixed-readiness pairing with an encouraging peer model during Task A.
Advanced / High-Achieving Students:
- "Chameleon Challenge": Take flexible words (e.g., fast, well, light) and craft 3 distinct sentences using each as an adjective, adverb, noun, or verb.
- Differentiate coordinating vs. subordinating conjunctions and evaluate prepositional phrases acting adverbially vs. adjectivally.
ENL students:
- Visual Grammar Anchor Cards: Pair each part with an illustrative icon (e.g., running sneakers for verbs, magnifying glass for adjectives).
- Syntax Comparison Alert: Explicitly model English word order differences (e.g., adjective preceding noun in English vs. post-nominal placement in Spanish: "blue car" vs. "coche azul").
- Sentence Frames: Provide structured stems: "The word [____] is a [____] because it [modifies/connects/names] [____]."
- Dual-language cognate awareness (e.g., verbo/verb, preposición/preposition).
IEP/504 students:
- Chunked Task Volume: Complete 3 high-leverage strips during You Do rather than 5, preserving conceptual rigor.
- Sensory Highlighting: Allow physical color manipulation (color-coded flags) to reduce visual clutter.
- Extended Processing & Scribe: 1.5x time on Daily Formative; accept oral dictation if fine-motor fatigue occurs.
- Seating in direct proximity to primary anchor chart and teacher facilitation table.
Homework:
"Real-World Grammar Detective Scavenger Hunt":
Select any paragraph from an independent reading novel or news article and complete the following:
- Copy one compound or complex sentence verbatim.
- Underline and label at least six different parts of speech in that sentence.
- Write a 2-sentence explanation of how changing one adverb or adjective would alter the sentence's tone or imagery.
Pacing & Due Date: Estimated 15 minutes. Due tomorrow at the start of the ELA block.
Formative Assessment:
-
Do Now Check: Rapid scanning of warm-up journals during first 3 minutes provides immediate baseline data on naming vs. modifier recall.
-
Fist-to-Five & Whiteboard Pulses: Real-time checks during We Do modeling to spot lingering misconceptions regarding prepositions vs. adverbs.
-
Active Circulation Rubric: Clipboard tracker marking individual student mastery on identifying dual-function words during paired work.
-
Daily Formative Exit Ticket: 2-question targeted check evaluated at the end of class:
• Mastery: 2/2 correct with accurate functional explanations.
• Approaching: 1/2 correct (slated for 5-min small-group review tomorrow).
Summative Assessment:
-
Unit 1 Grammar Mastery Examination (Friday): 30-item cumulative assessment including:
1. Identification of parts of speech in authentic literary excerpts.
2. Analysis of how word function shifts depending on syntax.
3. Error correction and sentence diagramming.
-
Narrative Writing Syntax Portfolio: Students submit revised narrative drafts demonstrating intentional part-of-speech variation, evaluated using the Evergreen Grade 7/8 Conventions Rubric.
Standard Benchmark: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.7.1 & L.8.1 (80% minimum proficiency standard for passing).
