Rule Anchor: The Stand-In Words
1. What is a Pronoun?
A word that replaces a noun to avoid repeating it. Examples: he, she, it, they, him, her, them, its, their.
2. What is an Antecedent?
The specific noun that the pronoun refers back to. (The real noun the pronoun replaced!)

Pronouns must match their antecedent in NUMBER (singular or plural).
Singular

Use: he, she, it, him, her, his, its
Plural
2+ People or Things
Use: they, them, their, theirs

Check: “Students” is plural (more than one), so we must use plural “their”!
