Maya adjusted her cap and pulled out her notebook. As a young detective, she knew that every clue mattered. Her neighbor’s cat, Barnaby, had been missing since yesterday. Maya was determined to find him.
She walked toward the edge of the woods. Usually, Maya was a very active person who loved to run and jump, but today she moved slowly. She had to be quiet. She had to listen.
Suddenly, she stopped in front of the Old Miller Estate. The house was falling apart, and it was surrounded by a massive iron fence. The bars were thick and rusty. Maya peaked through the gate. In the middle of the overgrown yard sat a small wooden shed with a heavy padlock on the door.
From inside the shed, she heard a faint "Meow!" It was Barnaby! He sounded sad.
"Don't worry, Barnaby!" Maya whispered. "I'll get you out."
Maya realized the poor cat was being held captive inside that dark shed. But who had put him there? And how would she get past the gate? Just then, she heard the sound of heavy boots crunching on the dry leaves behind her...
