1. Definition / Restatement
Direct
The author directly states the meaning in the sentence using clear restatement or appositives.
Signal Words & Punctuation:
is, means, defined as, commas (,), dashes (—), parentheses ( )
Example: "The arboreal creature—meaning an animal that lives in trees—swung effortlessly between branches."
2. Synonym / Comparison
Same
The author uses a familiar word or phrase with a similar meaning nearby to clarify the target term.
Signal Words:
like, also, similarly, likewise, in other words, as well as
Example: "The debate coach was articulate; likewise, his team spoke in a clear and fluent manner."
3. Antonym / Contrast
Opposite
The author provides an opposite clue to show what the word does not mean.
Signal Words:
but, however, unlike, although, on the other hand, in contrast
Example: "Unlike his talkative and outgoing brother, Marcus remained completely taciturn."
4. Inference / Cause & Effect
Reason
The meaning is implied through cause-and-effect relationships, situational details, or background logic.
Signal Words:
because, since, as a result, consequently, therefore, so
Example: "Because the storm knocked out the power grid for three days, our supplies became depleted until none remained."
