Minute-by-Minute Session Map
MIN 1-2
The Conductor's Code: Punctuation Drill
2 MIN
Draw punctuation signs on the board. Explain that punctuation is a "musical road map" telling our voices when to take breaths and change volume.
, (Comma) = Tiny tap / breath . (Period) = Stop / drop voice ! (Exclamation) = High energy!
MIN 3-5
Solo Modeling: "My Voice, Your Voice"
3 MIN
Read the first section of the passage. Model poor robot-reading, then model expressive chunking using slashes on the sheet. Have students echo read matching your inflection exactly.
Teacher Script: "Listen how my voice swoops up at this question mark: 'Who will play the bass?' Now echo me!"
MIN 6-8
Unison Symphony: Choral Reading
3 MIN
Read the next paragraph as an entire class. Control pacing by conducting with your hand. Sweep your hand to sustain phrases and snap your fingers gently at punctuation pauses. Keep the group completely in sync.
MIN 9-11
Duo Practice: Partner Symphony
3 MIN
Students pair up. Partner A reads the passage while Partner B acts as the "Conductor," monitoring punctuation pauses and highlighting any skipped pauses or monotone sections on their tracking sheet. Swap roles.
MIN 12
The Encore: Expression Check & Questions
1 MIN
Select one student to read a designated sentence with maximum expression. Conclude the routine by having students answer the 3 quick-strike comprehension checks independently.
Teacher Troubleshooting Cheat Sheet
The Monotone Robot
If a student reads without pitch shift, use the "Voice Coaster" prompt. Have them draw curvy lines in the air as they read matching high and low tones.
The Speed Racer
If a student zooms through periods, use "Stop-Sign-Tapping" . They must tap their pencil twice on their desk before uttering the next sentence's word.
Unit: Vocal Orchestra Fluency Series Pacing Alert: Maintain momentum. Never stay on one step over its time limit!
