Step 2: Substitution Cue: "Now watch closely! Take away sound #1 (/s/) and replace it with /k/. Push the new chip in. Blend the new word: /k/ /t/ /ɒ/ /p/ doesn't make sense! Let's swap sound #2 (/t/) to /l/. Now blend: /k/ /l/ /ɒ/ /p/ → 'CLOP'!"
Step 3: Deletion Cue: "Say 'clop' without the /k/. What is left? → 'LOP'!"
• Limit words to 2–3 phonemes (VC and CVC only: at, sit, map, rug) before advancing to consonant blends.
• Use tactile felt squares or pop-its so students physically feel tactile resistance when popping each sound.
• Pre-teach continuous sounds (/m/, /s/) before stop sounds (/t/, /p/) so students can stretch sounds without breaks.
• Provide handheld mirrors so students can inspect lip shape, tongue placement, and airflow for English sounds (e.g., /th/ vs /f/, /b/ vs /v/).
• Pair spoken words with contextual image icons so vocabulary comprehension reinforces the auditory task.
• Introduce 5-to-6 phoneme words with complex triple blends (splat, spring, strand).
