The Secret of Whispering Creek
By Elena Brooks • Lexile: 520L • 215 Words
[1]
Oliver was a young river otter with sleek brown fur and whiskers that twitched whenever he smelled adventure. Every morning, he tumbled down the muddy riverbank into Whispering Creek. His favorite pastime was diving for shiny pebbles at the sandy bottom. But this sunny morning, a sharp, frantic chirping echoed through the tall cattails near the river bend.
[2]
Oliver paddled silently through the thick green weeds. Tucked inside a tangle of thorny brambles sat a tiny, yellow duckling. The duckling had fluttered too far from the open water and now its webbed foot was snagged tightly on a floating twig. "Cheep! Cheep!" the duckling cried, trembling with fear as water splashed nearby.
[3]
"Do not fret, little one," Oliver whispered gently. He knew that pulling fast could hurt the duckling's tender foot. Instead, Oliver used his nimble front paws to carefully untwist the wet twigs one by one. Above them, a tall blue heron perched on a rock, watching with watchful yellow eyes. With one final nudge, the branch slipped free!
[4]
The duckling splashed happily in circles. Just around the bend, Mother Duck appeared, quacking loudly with relief. She gently ushered her baby into the warm sunshine. Oliver smiled and leaped into the air, creating a grand splash. He realized that helping a friend was even better than finding the shiniest pebble in the creek.
