Phonics Is The Secret Code of Reading
You don't need flashcards or worksheets! Reading growth happens in joyful 3-to-5 minute moments while driving, cooking dinner, or getting ready for bed. Here are easy ways to play with sounds every day.
4 Fun Games You Can Play Anywhere (Zero Prep!)
1
Robot Talk (Blending)
Talk like a robot by saying words sound-by-sound. Ask your child to translate!
"Please hand me the /f/-/or/-/k/!" → "Fork!"
2
Sound I-Spy (First Sound)
Focus on the sound , not the letter name, when scanning the room or car window.
"I spy something starting with /mmm/!" → "Milk!"
3
Rhyme Tennis (Onset-Rime)
Serve a word, and volley back and forth with rhyming words until someone gets stuck.
You: "Bat!" Child: "Cat!" You: "Hat!" Child: "Splat!"
4
Sound Switcher (Manipulation)
Show how changing just one sound builds a brand-new word!
"What word do we get if we swap /p/ in pig with /w/?" → "Wig!"
What to Say Instead of Just "Sound It Out!"
Try This
"Tap each sound on your arm, then slide." • Helps children hold each phoneme in memory before blending.
Try This
"Look at the vowel in the middle first. What sound does it make?" • Vowels are the core anchor of every syllable.
Try This
"Cover up the end of the word. Let's read the first part together." • Reduces visual overwhelm on longer words.
