Peach Clues Lesson Plan
Text: James and the Giant Peach (Roald Dahl) • Chapters 7 & 8
Single Skill Focus Using Text Evidence
NYS Standard & Learning Objective
NYS Next Gen Standard 5R1: Locate and refer to relevant details and evidence when explaining what a text says explicitly/implicitly and make logical inferences.
Objective (SWBAT): Students will support an interpretation of James's character traits and emotions in Chapters 7 & 8 by citing at least two relevant, accurate pieces of textual evidence and explaining their connection.
Key Vocabulary
Interpretation: What you think the text means.
Text Evidence: Exact words/facts that prove it.
Relevance: Directly related to the claim.
Pacing Breakdown (Total: 40 Minutes)
5 Min Do Now
10 Min I Do (Modeling)
10 Min We Do (Guided)
10 Min You Do (Indep.)
5 Min Exit Ticket
1 Do Now: Hook & Evidence Warm-Up (5 Minutes) Individual → Pair Share
Task on Student Sheet: Look at a picture/scenario of a locked garden gate at midnight. James sneaks out while Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker sleep. Prompt: "Is James being foolish, daring, or desperate? Pick one interpretation and give 1 reason why."
Teacher Facilitation (2 min share): Cold call two students with differing interpretations. Highlight: "Notice how an interpretation is an opinion, but it only becomes convincing when backed up with facts from the story!"
2 Direct Instruction: The Evidence Sandwich Formula (10 Minutes) I Do (Teacher Modeling)
Introduce the 3-part Claim-Quote-Explain (C-Q-E) Sandwich anchor chart aligned to NYS 5R1:
Top Bread: Claim Make an interpretation.
"James is terrified but curious."
Filling: Quote / Evidence Cite exact text words (5R1).
"The text states, '...'"
Bottom Bread: Explain Connect evidence to claim.
"This shows that..."
Scripted Model (Chapter 7 Excerpt - James touches the giant peach):
Teacher Think-Aloud: "Watch me find evidence for this claim: James feels awe and wonder toward the peach. I look at Chapter 7: Dahl writes that James 'put out a hand and touched it... the skin was soft and warm and slightly furry, like the skin of a baby mouse.'"
Connecting Explanation: "Why does this prove awe? James doesn't run away; he gently touches it and Dahl compares it to something gentle like a baby mouse, showing he finds it comforting, not scary."

3
Guided Practice / We Do (10 Min)
Passage: Ch. 7 (James discovers the tunnel entrance near the grass and crawls inside).
Partner Task: Test two candidate quotes for the claim: "James shows incredible bravery when entering the peach."
• Quote A: "The grass was wet with dew." (Weak/Irrelevant)
• Quote B: "He took a deep breath, and on hands and knees crawled in." (Strong/Relevant - NYS 5R1)
Check for Understanding: Thumbs up/down on relevance. Guide students to explain why Quote B directly supports bravery (overcoming hesitation).
4
Independent Practice / You Do (10 Min)
Passage: Ch. 8 (James crawls through the dark tunnel and enters the peach stone chamber).
Student Mission: Complete the Evidence Detective Organizer on Worksheet:
1. Select interpretation: "The creatures in the peach stone initially terrify James."
2. Locate & copy 2 direct text quotes showing his fear (NYS 5R1).
3. Write 2 sentences connecting quotes to the claim.
Teacher Circulates: Use clipboard checklist to mark students who have cited verbatim text evidence vs. mere summaries.
5
Exit Ticket & Closure (5 Minutes)
NYS 5R1 Formative Check
Students complete the standalone Exit Ticket: Support the interpretation: "Even though James is frightened, the creatures treat him as a guest rather than an enemy." Students must quote 1 action/dialogue from the Centipede or Old-Green-Grasshopper and write 1 explanatory sentence.
Proficient (3 pts): Accurate direct quote + clear logical explanation.
Approaching (2 pts): Accurate quote but explanation is vague or summary.
Developing (1 pt): Paraphrase or inaccurate quote with no explanation.
Targeted Differentiation Matrix (NYS Next Gen 5R1: Using Text Evidence)
Striving Readers (Low)
- Excerpts pre-chunked with 3 numbered candidate sentences in margin.
- Scaffolded multiple-choice matching: match quote to best explanation.
- Provide pre-drawn quotation marks to reinforce quoting exact words.
Advanced Readers (High)
- Evaluate competing interpretations: find evidence that James felt both fear AND excitement simultaneously.
- Analyze author's diction: explain how specific sensory verbs deepen Dahl's eerie mood.
Students with IEPs
- Color-coded graphic organizer (Blue = Claim, Yellow = Quote, Green = Reason).
- Cloze sentence frames: "On page 31, Dahl writes '____'. This proves James is ____ because ____."
- Option for oral transcription/speech-to-text for written explanation.
Multilingual / ENL Learners
- Visual vocabulary cards with pictures (peach tunnel, velvet skin, peach stone, Centipede).
- Bilingual sentence starters and word bank for emotion words (terrified, astonished, curious, welcoming).
- Partner echo-reading of the excerpt before citing evidence.

1 Do Now: Midnight Garden Mystery (5 Minutes) Warm-Up
In Chapter 7, the house is dark and Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker are fast asleep. James slips outside alone into the pitch-black garden to look at the colossal peach glowing in the moonlight.
Which word best describes James's decision to sneak out? (Circle one choice):
[ A ] DARING (Brave)
[ B ] CURIOUS (Eager to know)
[ C ] DESPERATE (Unhappy at home)
Explain your choice using one specific reason from your memory of the story:
The Evidence Sandwich Formula (NYS Standard 5R1: Locate & Refer to Details)
1. Claim (Interpretation) State what you think: "James is fascinated by the peach."
2. Quote (Evidence - 5R1) Cite exact words: The text states, "the skin was soft and warm..."
3. Explain (Reasoning) Connect the dots: This shows he feels drawn to it rather than scared.
2 Guided Practice: Selecting the Best Evidence (10 Minutes) We Do
Interpretation Claim: "James feels an irresistible urge to explore the inside of the peach, even though he knows it might be dangerous."
Read these three sentences from Chapter 7. Which piece of text evidence best proves this interpretation?
[ A ] "The moon was shining brightly on the garden."
[ B ] "Just below the hole on the ground was a small pile of peach flesh."
[ C ] "He put his head into the hole and started crawling along the tunnel."
Why is your chosen sentence the strongest evidence for the claim?

Chapter 8 Excerpt (Inside the Peach Stone)
James stood staring at the extraordinary creatures. His knees knocked together with fear, and he opened his mouth to scream, but no sound came out. Sitting around a table were seven giant creatures: an enormous grasshopper, a huge centipede with hundreds of legs, an earthworm as thick as a tree trunk, a ladybug, a spider, and a glow-worm. The Centipede looked up and grinned with all his teeth. "Look who's here!" the Centipede barked warmly. James trembled, unable to move a single step.
