Open vs. Closed Syllables
O
Open Syllable
Ends in a vowel sound
Rule: Vowel makes its long sound.
Examples: ro•bot, pi•lot, so•lar
C
Closed Syllable
Vowel closed by consonant
Rule: Vowel makes a short sound.
Examples: sig•nal, can•yon, fos•sil
Notice if the first vowel is long or short as we meet each deep-sea word!
Word 1 of 6 Open Syllable First
ro • bot
Noun
robot
Meaning
A machine that can move and do tasks by computer or remote control.
In Context
"Scientists send an underwater robot deep into the dark sea."
Underwater ROV
Deep-sea robotic machine
Syllable clue: ro ends in a vowel, so it says long /ō/!
Word 2 of 6 Open Syllable First
pi • lot
Noun
pilot
Meaning
A trained person who drives, steers, or guides a ship or vehicle.
In Context

Ship Pilot
Steering and navigation
Syllable clue: pi ends in a vowel, so it says long /ī/!
Word 3 of 6 Open Syllable First
so • lar
Adjective
solar
Meaning
Having to do with the sun, or power made from bright sunlight.
In Context
"In the dark abyss, machines cannot run on solar energy."
Sun Energy
Light turned into power
Syllable clue: so is open, so 'o' makes its long name /ō/!
Word 4 of 6 Closed Syllable First
sig • nal
Noun
signal
Meaning
An electrical message or sound wave sent to share directions.
In Context
"The pilot sends a fast electric signal down the long wire."
Electronic Wave
Data sent through cables
Syllable clue: sig ends in 'g', making 'i' a short /ĭ/ sound!
Word 5 of 6 Closed Syllable First
can • yon
Noun
canyon
Meaning
A deep valley with very steep rocky walls on land or undersea.
In Context
"Animals live along the steep walls of an ocean canyon."
Deep Rock Walls
Steep ocean trenches
Syllable clue: can ends in 'n', so 'a' makes a short /ă/ sound!
Word 6 of 6 Closed Syllable First
fos • sil
Noun
fossil
Meaning
The hardened remains or prints of ancient plants or animals.

Deep in the Dark Sea
Miles under the ocean waves, there is a place called the abyss. No sunlight can reach this dark world. The water is freezing cold and very heavy. It pushes down with so much force that it could crush a car! Because of this, no human diver can swim down there. Instead, scientists build a tough machine called an ocean robot. This explorer glides through the silent water to snap photos and take samples.
How the Machine Works
Down in the pitch black, the robot cannot use solar power from the sun. Instead, it links to a big research ship with a long, strong cable. A trained pilot sits at a desk on the ship. The pilot steers the craft by sending an electric signal down the wire. The machine's navigation system uses sound and a digital magnet to steer around rocks. Clear glass lenses help its camera focus on tiny sea creatures.
Amazing Ocean Discoveries
The robot finds strange life along the sea floor. It uses mechanical arms made of metal and plastic to gently pick up sea stars. Along the rocky walls of an underwater canyon, sea worms find shelter near warm cracks in the earth. Sometimes, researchers even find an ancient shark tooth fossil resting in the mud!
