Style Armor Handbook
QUICK GUIDE
Academic writing is your intellectual defense. Use this manual to craft authoritative prose and perfect punctuation.
The Golden Rules of Academic Tone
Formal writing requires objectivity and precision. Avoid conversational language, emotional hyperbole, and weak subjective expressions.
Informal Draft (Vulnerable) Academic Revision (Armored) "I think that the author made a pretty good point about..." "The author demonstrates compellingly that..." "Technology is super great but it has some bad sides." "While technological advancements offer benefits, they introduce critical challenges." "You can see how the characters don't really get along." "The interpersonal tension between characters highlights the central conflict."
No First Person
Banish "I," "me," "my," "we," and "us." Write from an objective third-person perspective.
Cut Contractions
Avoid contractions. Spell out terms ("do not," "cannot") to project professional rigor.
Active Voice
Write "Scientists ran the trials" rather than "The trials were run by scientists." Keep prose active.
The Punctuation Arsenal
Punctuation shapes reading speed, logical flow, and structural authority. Master these five core writing shields:
;
The Semicolon: Independent Connector
Links related independent clauses without coordinating conjunctions.
"The apparatus failed; the data survived."
:
The Colon: Logical Gateway
Introduces a list, quote, or explanatory addition following a complete sentence.
"We monitored three parameters: heat, mass, and drag."
—
The Em-Dash: Parenthetical Accent
Isolates high-priority parenthetical details. Connect with no surrounding spaces.
"The main catalyst—salinity—remained unchanged."
,
The Comma: Oxford Distinction
Use commas to split introductory phrases, and always place one before "and" in a list.
"Ultimately, we verified the size, scale, and density."
"
Quotation Marks & Parenthetical Citations
Commas and periods stay inside normal quote marks. However, when quoting with an academic citation, the punctuation must shift to the outside of the parenthesis.
Incorrect: "The findings represent a paradigm shift." (Vance 14)
Corrected: "The findings represent a paradigm shift" (Vance 14).

Academic Affix Guide
AFFIX SHIELD
Academic fields communicate using specialized Greek and Latin building blocks. Master these core prefixes and suffixes to decode and construct formal scholarly vocabulary.
Natural & Social Sciences (STEM / APA focus)
Scientific disciplines rely heavily on precise, descriptive Greek roots detailing states of matter, biological structures, and empirical conditions.
Common Prefixes (STEM)
hyper- (over / excessive) → hyperactivation, hyperbole
hypo- (under / deficient) → hypothesis, hypothermia
neuro- (relating to nerves) → neuroplasticity, neuron
psycho- (mind / mental process) → psychometrics, psychoanalysis
Common Suffixes (STEM)
-ology (study of / science of) → methodology, sociology
-osis (process / diseased state) → symbiosis, neurosis
-asis/-esis (action / process) → homeostasis, synthesis
-ic (having characteristics of) → empirical, systemic
Humanities, Arts, & Literature (MLA focus)
Humanities fields track cultural movements, stylistic descriptions, literary structures, and systemic philosophies.
Common Prefixes (Humanities)
meta- (transcending / beyond) → metanarrative, metaphor
post- (after / behind) → postmodernism, postcolonial
de- (reversing / removing) → deconstruction, debunk
proto- (first / primary) → prototype, protagonist
Common Suffixes (Humanities)
-ism (doctrine / belief system) → existentialism, romanticism
-esque (resembling / in style of) → Kafkaesque, statuesque
-graphy (written / field of study) → historiography, biography
-centric (centered around) → ethnocentric, anthropocentric
The Scholarly Word Builder
Combine prefixes, roots, and suffixes to unlock complex meanings:
[de-] (reverse) + [construct] (build) + [-ion] (action/state) = Deconstruction (the critical literary process of breaking down a text to expose internal contradictions).

HIGH SCHOOL STYLE MANUAL
Slide 1 / 5
Why Style Formatting Matters
Core Philosophy
Accountability
Provides a transparent trail. Readers can instantly locate the empirical source of any individual claim.
No Plagiarism
Predictability
Uniform layouts ensure that your readers are never distracted by weird fonts, wacky headers, or missing pages.
Seamless UX
Authority
Signals that your writing conforms to the highest structural standards of the academic community.
Elite Credit
Think of style guides as professional blueprints. Slide 2 / 5
MLA: The Humanities Shield
Modern Language Association
Core Philosophical Objective
The humanities prioritize who is writing and where in the document the ideas live. Because literary texts are analyzed word-for-word, page numbers are essential.
Core In-Text Format:
"The quote goes here" (Smith 243).
Structural Foundations
1
Header: Page numbers are preceded by your last name (e.g., Jones 4) in the top right.
2
Heading Block: Left corner lists Name, Teacher, Course, and Date on four separate double-spaced lines.
3
Bibliography: Formally titled Works Cited at the top of a completely new page.
MLA does not require a cover page for student assignments. Slide 3 / 5
APA: The Social Science Radar
American Psychological Association
Core Philosophical Objective
The sciences prioritize timeliness and chronology . Because knowledge updates rapidly, the publication year is placed at the absolute front of the citation.
Core In-Text Format:
"The quote goes here" (Jones, 2021, p. 14).
Structural Foundations
1
Title Page: Student essays require a highly formalized title page featuring paper title, author, affiliation, and course details.
